Looks like this is that CD that was available at the NYC show kim had a few months ago... I attempted contacting the gallery to see if they'd ship me one... But they wouldn't. Bummer. I had heard that the running time on this thing was around 10 minutes? limited to 100 copies. http://cgi.ebay.com/Kim-Gordon-Mirror-Dash-Come-Across-Zine-CD-RARE_W0QQitemZ170301594054QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic _CDs?hash=item170301594054&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_t rkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318 |301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A50 |

I'm so glad that I'm not a completist any more.
(Things might have been different if it had been something by Lee though) |

Actually, I think that's one of the things that has really subtracted from Sonic Youth over the years--and increasingly subtracted: the fact that there's simply too much out there to buy on so many different labels in so many different formats--especially if one is into the solo and side projects as well. I remember back in the early to mid '90s, that was one of the major issues that caused people to fall away from Canadian band Eric's Trip: there were simply so many cassette-only, and 7-inch-only, and CD-only releases on so many different labels, in such limited pressings, PLUS the solo and side projects, that fans just couldn't keep up, and got discouraged. |

is it the band's fault the rest of us can't keep up? is it fair to slow down the fast runners so the whole herd might play? |

I certainly see your point, but Sonic Youth lose out in the end, too. I think that many of their (certainly) mainstream albums could have found a bigger audience and been far more successful over the years if they hadn't had so many projects in hand. They've been spreading themselves increasingly too thin, and everyone's been losing out to some degree in some manner. They actually remind me of Marvel Comics in the early to mid '90s, with the explosion of multiple character titles and cross-over stories, leading up to the bust (from which they've never fully recovered). |

No, I can't agree there. I can't imagine there are that many people are going to have spent much time standing in a record shop with Dirty in one hand and Please Just Leave Me My Paul Desmond in the other, going "shit, I just don't know which to buy...." |

It's also these side projects that end up turning me on to other music. To think of the other work I've been exposed to because of them. For me its been a win.

Well, far more than you think--especially when it comes to the more serious and readily available solo and side projects. (A devoted fan has to choose between a Bark Haze CD limited to 250 copies, a one-sided Ranaldo LP limited to 200 copies, a Thurston picture disc limited to 500 copies, and the latest Sonic Youth 'mainstream' album available in 'limitless' quantities on all three formats--now surely scenarios like that have eaten into the rapidity of the band's mainstream album sales over the years. They've been their own worst enemies on many occasions.) But I also meant that Sonic Youth have spent a great deal of time making and touring behind those side releases--time that might have been better spent writing, recording and promoting the Geffen and SYR titles. I mean, look how the SYR series got sidetracked after Goodbye 20th Century in '99.... |
