Carly Simon sues Starbucks over her 2008 album; Sonic Youth also says Hear Music label lacked marketing oomph
Posted by Melissa Allison AP reports that the lawsuit, filed Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, says the album "wasn't available in 'a substantial number' of Starbucks stores during the key early months following its release. Later, when the disc was stocked in Starbucks locations, the Seattle-based company slashed the price." The legal action comes a few months after Sonic Youth expressed disappointment at Starbucks' treatment of their "Hits Are For Squares" album, which they expected to sell big. Instead, band member Kim Gordon told Spinner, "It's impossible to find anywhere." Gordon also said, "[i]t took so long that by the time it came out their music division had been basically cut." In the midst of Starbucks' reorganization, its Hear Music label faded into marketing oblivion at Concord Music Group. |

Hmm...I wonder if I could find it my local Starbucks. They've said themselves that it's the rarest cd in their discography, right? Maybe they will be worth something some day?

if i were kim i wouldn't blame starbucks. trendy indie kids aren't going to some corporate whore company for their fix, they're hitting the most obscure, tiny cafes that serve the best triple skim ultra lite lates you can find.

I found mine at a Starbucks at the Woodbury Commons outlets in upstate New York. I had no idea at the time how lucky I was.

why did sy need to put out that album
they must make heaps off touring + their back catalogue (which is unusually consistent for a band that has been around for so long.) |

SY are loaded.
No sarcasm, they're rich as fuck. I mean, they have to be -- look at this message board! [note: This is a joke currently without a punchline. Feel free to fill in the blanks.] |

I figured since their house is absolutely massive plus they own property in New York that they're kind of loaded.

Right on. I dunno if it's just from SY, though, and keep in mind we've only seen Kim and Thurston's house. Still, I don't think any of them are starving.

Well 10 years ago Kim sold her fashion line for a million or so. And they made more than a million on the DN shows (apparently)...

I remember seeing one in upstate NY back when I lived there. I looked at the tracklist, and said fuck it. I already have all the albums, it would just be a waste of money to buy the same songs again.

unbelievable....er...Free Steve !!! (SY needs a less friendly and most "wild" drummer...like that one of motley crue...I can't remember his name...) I can't understand why this guys of Starbucks made the wrong things if they get great success with the McCartney album... |

I except that they are probably still making up for some of the costs of production.
