I thought it was an intelligent hard sci-do film with enough cerebral elements to give it a genre-bending appeal. It’s in a class with Blade Runner 2049, Arrival and Interstellar. (Not as good as BR or Arrival though.) It was unsettling, but NOWHERE NEAR AS UNSETTLING AS THE BOOK. Oh my wowza. All in all, a great movie that is indeed too smart for most audiences. I mean, what kind of Michael Bay-loving stooge is going to even know what a Hox gene is, let alone how prisms work? Seriously. |

im doing my last bunch of good movie watching before the world cup starts in earnest
just watched juzo itami’s SUPERMARKET WOMAN (1996) part hilarious farce, part business school, part serious drama, add some improbable shenanigans, and you have an afternoon of fun. kind of like tampopo in a supermarket! less episodic and more of a straighforward story than its predecessor. some reviewers have been saying that it’s also about “food”. bullshit i say. like that zen and the motorcycle maintenance book, both this and tampopo are about QUALITY. also, appearances by awesome trucks. eta: apparently DEKOTORA is a thing! and there’s a whole genre of movie about them. who knew! i must find some. anyway SUPERMARKET WOMAN is kind of a ridiculous movie but very conscious of it and highly entertaining. |

I thought so too. I hated the valkyrie. I hate some of the humour, it's so lame. Like how many times do they make jokes of "ooo he fell on his bottom!"? Too many times, I tell you.

I really enjoyed Ragnarok. But I love Guardians of the Galaxy and this felt like set up for Thor meeting them in Infinity War.

This is truth. It was hollywood-ized a bit, and frankly, 99% of what happened in Area X was left out of the film. It is more like a shadow of the book, with the typical hollywood "surprise" ending

a couple more ragnarok types, the 2013 Scandi version, it's pretty good,
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2363213/ and the 2009 Vahalla Rising https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0862467/?ref_=nm_knf_t3 as for the recent comic one, I had hopes for it being that it was Taika Waititi, but I turned it off after 15 minutes. Couldn't get traction into it. Bored, moved along. |

Ai Wei Wei's Human Flow. Ai has a great method and a wonderful sense of humor and humanity. This is an excellent documentary, essential for anyone concerned about refugees and migrants.

super-exhausted to wake up before 4am to catch the france game, im now watching van damme’s KICKBOXER
good-stupid and hilarious. just what my tired brain needs: a highly predictable action movie [eta: it was great stupid fun. please send more.] OH. yesterday watched this beautiful fucking greek short film, konstantina kotzamani’s WASHINGTONIA (2014) it’s listed in various places as a “documentary”. wtf? NO! they might toss some data into the proceedings but this shit is pure poetry. the best fucking film poetry you’ll see in a long time. and no it’s not pretentious or boring or any of this shit, not if you’re paying attention, because there’s like 3-4 stories told at the same time in there. it’s VERY FUCKING GOOD. this lady is a beautiful genius. here’s the trailer: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/washingtoniashortfilm it’s so gorgeously photographed it at times hurts — ps grow up from comic book movies you lot lmao |

... Weird response to Boogie Nights. Haha. Not my favorite PTA film, and (at least at the time) it seemed quite GoodFellas-esque, like it was impossible to make an ensemble piece about a seedy subculture withot evoking that film. But maybe I need to watch it again. For me, it’s like: There Will Be Blood > The Master > Magnolia > Boogie Nights > Inherent Vice. (Haven’t seen Phantom Thread) |

Said the dude watching Van Damme both ironically and non-ironically? Also, there are simply too many “comic book” movies to avoid watching them. Fuck’s sake, I haven’t even seen Infinity War or Deadpool 2 yet and I still feel bludgeoned to death by comic book movies after catching up with the ones from late 2017/early 2018. Fuck. |

yeah i only devoted a couple of sentences to the thing i watched for lols im not really trying to say dont watch comic book movies, there’s a place in life for them, and maybe i failed at making that clear. the part where for me it gets ridiculous is where grown ass men and women seriously debate that shit like serious business with no end in sight. i guess it’s more directed to websites like kotaku &tc, but i see a bit of it here too. “thor! serious business!” page upon page. i.e., theyre suddenly the most important films by the volume of words written about them. read the other day a thing where people discussed wonderwomans TIARA to no end. fucksakes. and no these werent costume makers. but there’s not really that much in them is there? at best they’re entertaining, at worst they’re dull exercises in cgi effects probably best examined by software engineers. no? i guess the most interesting thing about them is how they’re the only kind of movie sufficiently financed these days and there is no middle ground anymore. it’s either a $100+ million budget or less than $5 million. and it must have eye-candy megastars in childrens costumes or else it doesnt make its bloated budget back. the middle-budget movie made for adults no longer exists. we’re doomed as a civilization i suppose. oh, avatar 2 & 3 are being shot currently btw. important! |

Oh I wasn’t pissed. I was just being salty And yeah, comic book movies (CBMs) are mostly for lols and good times for me. They’re not serious business. (Except Dark Knight which is super serious fucking business and frankly not a comic book movie like the rest of the jokers, which are fun for shimmery silliness... TDK = SERIOUS ASS B, fuck y’all u know how I feel) |
