I sometimes wonder if I like her commentary more than I like the actual film. She's pretty much heavy-breathing through the whole thing. She did another great one on my DVD of The Birds. Basically just sketching her own S&M fantasy with Tippi Hedren.

God, I'd LOVE her to do a Showgirls commentary.

On Showgirls, I have limited shelf-space and have to keep most of my DVDs boxed away, but I have one shelf, long enough for about 100 DVDs that I reserve for films I always want at hand because there's never a time when I'm not in the mood to watch them. Films switch on and off of that shelf but never once has Showgirls not been there.

Swear you have both the worst and best taste in films of anyone I've ever known. Remember seeing Showgirls at about 15 and even then I figured it was a hella rough film and I loved some channel 5 trash back then

I used to love those erotic thrillers they'd show. The Shannon Tweed stuff with names that were always a variation on Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal. Fatal Instinct IV, Indecent Attraction II. Could never get enough of them.

Gave this a shot last night because even though it bombed I wanted to give the Wachowskis the benefit of the doubt. It seems like outside of the first Matrix movie most have written them off. This was a big, stylized sci-fi movie that was not based off a comic book and was not Star Wars. Visually there are some amazing shots. I think the big head scratcher is the casting. Mila Kunis as the female lead? Channing Tatum? Certainly not obvious choices when I think space adventure. Did I love it? No. Did I hate it? No. It was somewhere in the middle. Not sure if they were hoping to make a trilogy out of this or not, but as a one shot, its not completely a waste.

I'll be very careful not to spoil anything, because with this type of movie, pretty much anything you say might be a spoiler. Loved it. It's incredibly character-driven and the interactions of the impressive cast are cleverly scripted and performed. There's an emotional intelligence to at all that is quite admirable. The visuals are astounding and it makes me very happy to say that. I've been watching MCU movies for quite a while now and I liked a good amount of them - at worst I found them entertaining for an hour and a half if spotty, at best really good to great. But more often than not, the thing I liked least about them was the visual style - too sterile, too uninspired. Lots of clean, modernist interiors, grey skies and flat lighting. Someone once compared Civil War to looking at an empty parking lot. I'd have to agree with that, even though I really liked it for its writing, plot and characters.

Recently however, they started to be a bit more vivid. And Endgame has finally reached a point I'd consider to be fully cinematic - good framing, inspired camera work, well utilized color correction, beautiful strong contrasts, fine depth of field and some gorgeous locations - both real and computer generated.

And the score, fuck, the score. Bar Black Panther, the Iron Man theme, the main Avengers theme and maybe some parts of Winter Soldier, I struggle to remember any memorable piece of composed film music in the earlier movies. They were all just kind of there, meandering away in the background. Endgame however has a very lovely, very emotive score. And choice of songs for that matter. I'd have a lot more to say about plot elements and other aspects, but I'm afraid that would venture too much into spoiler territory. In a nutshell: Probably one of the best MCU movies, certainly the most cinematic.

Actually got a copy of that particular movie lying around. For some reason I never watched it though. I was going to, but somehow it never came to be. It happens sometimes. Think I'll pop it in one of these days. Thanks for reminding me I was supposed to watch this.

Such a great film that I've probably rewatched about 5 times since it came out. By now I'd actually consider it to be one of my favourite films.
Check out the TV series The Young Pope which is by Sorrentino too. That's just as brilliant as the great beauty in my eyes.

We've been through all this before but I still can't watch The Great Beauty without wondering why I'm not just watching Fellini do it all so much better?

because fellini doesnt do it so much better. it’s really a different tone and a different aesthetic and sorrentino does it beautifully.

there are thematical similarities in the idea of the writer lost in rome, but if we’re going that way then we could say why not just read lost illusions and skip fellini.

and where in dolce vita marcello is quickly lost in debauchery, with jep gambardella in spite of everything the angel still calls.

and jep is more literary and has such great lines. like when he dresses down the annoying friend who thinks she’s hot shit. dang!

and where la dolce vita is somewhat about the fall of western civilization and the individual falling into debauchery and vulgarity, the great beauty is about the persistence of sensibility in spite of all the noise.

amazing soundtrack too.

jep becomes a journalist having written a novel, marcello never gets there because of his job.

plus in la dolce vita marcello is a toy of the nobles, but in the great beauty, the nobles are for hire, haaa haaa haaa haaaa!

it’s really more contemporary.

(and the climbing of the stairs is not for show...)

yes, the films touch at many points (how could they not?) but they’re different things by different artists in different times. both are fucking amazing.

Yeah, 5 years on, 'love' is perhaps a bit strong but I do like it, even if I still think Fellini did it all far better .. which I would've thought even when I loved it. As Woody Allen would say, there's love and then there's luuuuurfe.

Anyway, watched Gilda last night

I don't know if I luuuuurfe that movie, or if I just luuuuurfe watching Rita Hayworth smoke cigarettes.

There are some people who just make me luff watching them smoke. Gilda is actually one of those films I have never actually seen. Should choose it for my next choice on film night.

Gilda's just flat out kinky. Glenn Ford holding his lighter at crotch height for Rita Hayworth pretty much sums it up
