Yeah, word. I am not sure I actually own any live hip-hop albums except for Ye's (pretty forgettable) Storytellers, and his (fairly awesome but way too LR-centric) Late Orchestration. Oh and Jay's "unplugged"... don't judge me... And some Roots shit.

Live albums are super hard in rap. Yet live performances (Black Star on Chapelle?) are often memorable as hell. Wonder why that is.

I have The Roots Come Alive and The Roots Present... neither come CLOSE to how good they sound live if you see them for real.

Kanye's Storytellers is hilarious.

Jay's Unplugged is good. A nice companion to Blueprint. And The Roots are on it. It might be my fav hip hop live album. But it's still not a 10 y'know?

The worst hip hop live album ever is ODB's Free To Be Dirty. Just saying.

I've got a Rocky bootleg live album. It's pretty good. But like this Cole, I don't know. Something doesn't work w/ just the audio I think. To much hypemen or letting the audience finish a line. It might be nice in person, but not on tape.

But I agree - there's phenomenal live performances you see on TV or youtube or whatever... Kanye & Common on Chappelle's Show... Odd Future or Kendrick on Fallon, right? But somehow the LIVE ALBUM is so hard to pull off.

Ha! Justice is swift. Now Mr. "We comin' for you Kanye, Niggah bettah RUN!" is sitting somewhere filing a report signing autographs for the South African military police. Probably looking sad.

For Kanye's part, he said: "I messed up. Children are off limits in my Twitter wars."

*shrug*

I have been to quite a few hip hop concerts. Most sucked shit due to terrible sound system/mix.

The only ones where the sound guy mixed the music properly for a hip hop show was De La Soul about 5 years back, the Roots about 7 years back, and Lupe Fiasco last year. Heavy bass, the treble was clear, the audio mix vocals were good but not too muddy or loud or buried...

Nearly every other hip hop concert I ahve been to sucked shit. All you can hear is four guys rapping at the same time and a muddy mix with no actual BASS in it. I thin k it is rock guys doing sound for rappers, or maybe the rappers are just rapping through a shitty mac p[owerbook and USB stick. who knows. It SUCKS SHIT though

Unfortunately I've never seen Kanye live, but I've seen some good rap shows. Kendrick Lamar in 2014 was probably the best. That guy is an athlete. But I've also had good experiences with Wu-Tang Clan, Ghostface solo, De la Spul, Jurassic 5, Shabazz Palaces and several others.

But often you get a stage full of dudes, half of whom you don't even know, just kinda yelling along with eachother. If you're a fan of the studio tracks it can really suck to hear them drown under shout outs and crowd calls.

Agreed completely i ditched Ghostface last week because frankly live hop hop is terrible. In reggae we have a term, "ice cream sound" (i.e. terrible mixdown)...

The only live hip hop i regretted not being able to go to was Dead Prez last fall, i was stuck in night class and it sold out at the door

Yawn. Over it.

Bring on the new music.

I love how the whole GOOD Fridays thing just evaporated after ONE Friday of new music.

I hope he leaks that shit soon. Something tells me he won't leak it at all, though.

Super curious about cover art.

That notebook page better not be the goddamn cover. Seriously.

I like this part:

Kanye West's six-album run between 2004's The College Dropout and 2013's Yeezus is hands down the greatest, most unstoppable streak of records in hip-hop history. And while great rapper streaks are not exactly unheard of (Bay Area ambassador E-40 is set to drop his 23rd excellent album any day now), there's been absolutely nothing comparable to West's level of daring, visibility and impact.

And the Beatles comparison.

But yeah... it's a pretty reverent article, but it doesn't exactly fill me with joy. I would take issue with some of the author's points (Ye is not ripping off the Weeknd, and Travi$ Scott has never even had Ye's table scraps, let alone his lunch), but I see where it's coming from.

Not the first time people have wondered what's left for Kanye to do, though.
