When I met Thurston after the Sonic Youth/Fall Out Boy concert in 84 Thurston said the reason his strings never break when he puts drumsticks through them is because he soaks his whole guitar in mayo for 30 minutes before each show. I think Steve does the same to his guitar but with baby wipes instead of mayo.

Steve uses ketchup. He and Lee have some weird ritual where they put ketchup on crackers, tie together squares of crackers, and skate on them by carefully tying them to their feet and skiing down Fall Out Boy's backs.
