I'm not particularly one to defend my gender (in fact my opinion of most males is pretty low), but there are plenty of fucked up mothers out there too. The tradition of neglectful fathers is certainly stronger, but a lot of the changes in society that have given women more "freedom" outside of child rearing have led to their children being a lower priority.

Yeah, my son is awesome. My biggest priority in life is to do everything I can to make his childhood a good and fulfilling experience. Unfortunately sending him to a weekend in Dubai for Women's Studies sessions with Auntie Knox is a bit out of the budget though.

Another tendency that I dislike when I see some feminists argue is the tendency to prioritize gender and its social instantiation over other relevant factors such as wealth or education. I think this primacy is what leads it to accusations of sexism.

I think the main problem is that it's really easy to posit one aspect of feminism as defining feminism as a whole; I was arguing with a Marxist about this a couple of weeks ago. He see the 'problem' of contemporary feminism as being twofold: first, it's built on a retroactive, revisionist view of first- and second-wave feminism; second, it's not held together by a coherent ideology or aim. I personally see this as a strength rather than a lack - inasfar as feminism is a blanket term which doesn't, in any given context, necessarily refer to a single thing; any criticism of feminism only ever appertains to whichever aspect of feminism being discussed.

As such, I think that while your (Bradders) criticism isn't off-mark in some respects, applying that particular criticism to feminism as a whole is necessarily going to fall wide of the mark. Feminism's plurality or (if you'll excuse the postmodernist rhetoric) multiplicity is precisely its strength (to my mind) in a world where single or monological ideologies are constantly belittled by cogent but unsubstantiative counter-arguments (I'm thinking of the various criticisms of statistics surrounding climate change).

Furthermore (if you'll further excuse the slightly indulgent post), the accusations of logical duplicity which necessarily follow what I've said above reveal to me a certain isolation of a failing in 'pure' logic; to my mind, 'feminism' as a cache-all term (of sorts) works brilliantly by having a broad, 'empirical' [used metaphorically] 'object' while (Baudrillardian) postmodernism flounders around 'the problem' of the subject.

Right, which is why I should emphasize some feminists rather than feminism as a whole.

Yeah, I did clock that - and while you and I might notice that, I suppose the problem is that it's a very pervasive argument to say 'some of [ill-defined group] do [x]' and have it spread wider than the ill-defined 'some'. Personally, I think due to the diffuse nature of feminism (and this isn't a criticism of you - this is the interbox after all) it's often necessary to isolate which trope you're referencing; also the use of 'primacy' without the object trope leaves more of an impression of generalisations rather than (what I presume to be) particulars.

neglectful mothers/parents have always existed.

to say changes in society makes that happen more often is completely unfounded and kind of replubican in a way? sort of like

these rockers are causing people to carry guns and shoot each other.
the world is coming to an end because fathers are raping daughters you see that on the news everyday.

my dear, dear friend, that is the most inane thing you have ever suggested. while I don't doubt that people of every political extreme bend social change to push their dogma. however, to deny that social change has influences on the way people in society behave is absolutely ridiculous.

I like working alongside women and having nearly all of my various bosses (and what an insane number that is!) be women. I would hate to live in a workplace where there weren't as many or more women than males (it's significantly more where I work). however, it's not a Republican thing to note that if a woman works 40+ hours a week, the time and attention she has left for childcare is going to be severely impacted.

this is also the case for men, and the best solution would of course to be to have a perfect partnership where the parents can balance all that together and still love and support each other. I tried that, but my wife decided she wanted to party like it's 1999 instead. somehow the parenting partnership is still mostly o.k. though, for now at least.
