Paranoid Park
I really enjoyed this. Watching Gus Van Sant's other movies, they always seem like something I'd REALLY like on paper, but his other movies have always left me with a sense of unfulfillment. This movie did throw out that feeling of unfulfillment and supplied me with a fresh taste of what Van Sant can REALLY do. Though it was shot in his typical art school type direction, I did feel that he tried to actually make it emotionally connecting and relatable which was really the film's strong point. I'm definitely going to watch this a few more times and see if I get bored with it. 8/10 |

pineapple express - 4/10
Never seen an audience so visibly upset with a movie before. Even the obvious stoners in attendance didn't like it! There were a few chuckles but the theatre was packed and it never erupted in laughter. Also probably never heard so many "that movie sucked" "Was that it?" "what the fuck was the point of that?" etc. walking out of a theatre before. I'd give it a lower rating but it was kind of entertaining in points, and they mentioned GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR (the fuck?!!!!!!!!). Just a complete mess of a movie. Didn't laugh one time, was actually pretty bored near the end of it. No idea what the movie was going for. I'm not a stoner, but I can appreciate stoner movies (Grandma's Boy, Dazed and Confused, Half-Baked, etc). Very unappealing characters from beginning to end. Glad most of you liked it, it just wasn't my thing I guess. I should note that by my rating scale, a 5 is an average, so I just found a "little below average" so don't get too offended, haha. |

Yeah.
Just not my thing. Didn't see the point, I thought the funniest part was at the very beginning with the testing in 1937. I thought the film just kinda got worse and worse as it went along and didn't understand the point of the big action thing at the end. Don't get me wrong, it was entertaining for most of its length and it wasn't terrible, I just thought it lacked cohesion. On the other hand, I liked Superbad (surprisingly), Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin, films with a lot of the same cast or with Judd Apatow directing/producing/writing/etc. So, I'm not "above" this kind of humor. Just didn't find much to like in it. |

I've heard only good things about Pineapple Express, even from people with similar movie tastes as me, but I don't think I could sit through another Seth Rogan movie. I hate that guy. I don't even know why. He's immature and has no clue how to write, but somehow it's always funny...
That list of cyberpunk is intriguing. Cyberpunk is the one nerdy fantasy genre that I completely love, but I don't actually know much about it. |

Yeah, I felt the same way last week when I saw stepbrothers, I hate Will Ferrel (Seth Rogen's in that too); actually pretty much the whole cast sucked. But I politely chuckled a few times at that.
This.. uh.. I didn't laugh at all. |

I'm not sure how I feel about seeing Pineapple Express.
The ad made it look like balls I'm not usually all the way down with this kind of movie Everyone who has seen it seems to like it I dunno, I'll probably just wait for it to be out on DVD.

Let me put it like this.
It starts out like a typical stoner movie, then at some point turns into a bad action flick, then at some point becomes a stoner movie again, has an overblown action ending (with the John Woo-ish two guns being held by one guy scene, of course), mentions GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR at some point, and has random bits of overplayed bro-to-bro friendship/love. Nothing really original or interesting besides a really long fight scene. And it has fucking Rosey Perez in it, of all people. If that sounds like your kind of movie, by all means... |

Well, keep in mind, they're going to show this on FX. FX already bought the rights to it. So, if you have cable/satellite TV, you can watch it in a good year and a half to two years. I don't think they'll have to edit much, besides "fuck". There wasn't too much bad content in it compared to what FX usually shows.
At some point, old crusty hairy Seth Rogen is on the phone with his high school girlfriend (?) and says, "You're going to go off to college, you're gonna get into Godspeed You! Black Emperor and the Shins..." Real weird. |

See I'm not really down with the overly active action scenes.
Ehhhh, so iffy.

There's a lot of action at the end. It was ridiculous/pointless.

Action scenes almost never turn out well. There are a few ways it can be pulled off--if they're creatively funny (Indiana Jones), overly violent (Tarantino), or contain more tension than action (Bruce Lee)--but for the most part they just look like a bad commercial.

As far as action goes, I think every action film looks kinda shitty in the face of HARD BOILED at this point.
But, action scenes in comedy films? Always turn out bad. |
