When I say I am an atheist, I very specifically mean that I do not see any evidence at all to believe that there is any sort of 'God', and that there seem to be more plausible scientific explanations for our existence. That said, I do not mean to say that I have can state with any certainty that there 'is no God', merely that I can't see any reason for saying that there is.
If I were to say that I was an agnostic, I would take that to mean that I did believe there was a God of some kind, as in a creator figure, but that I did not specifically feel that I could subscribe to any organised religion, or even make any specific assertions about this creator. 'I feel that there's probably something there, but I don't know what exactly'.

Agnosticism is the view that the truth value of certain claims—especially claims about the existence of any deity, but also other religious and metaphysical claims—is unknown or unknowable.[1] Agnosticism can be defined in various ways, and is sometimes used to indicate doubt or a skeptical approach to questions. In some senses, agnosticism is a stance about the differences between belief and knowledge, rather than about any specific claim or belief. As such, the term agnostic does not necessarily signal a particular view about religion or a deity, as some agnostics also identify as theists or atheists.

yes, like satan said, the definition of agnostic doesn't involve believing or disbelieving anything.

Unfortunately, all this quasi-scientific skepticism has us either attempting to maintain at all costs some sense of a meaningful relationship in understanding nature, reality, whatever (which seems to be the point of agreement between both sides in this debate, regardless of the 'ism' defended) or, I believe, the stronger conclusion that this relation is only a self-serving defense that has been undermined time and again throughout history.
Agnosticists (and weak atheists) are the last people to assert absolutely that metaphysical reality is unknowable. |
