in doel, belgium's ghost town... it's right next to a nuclear power plant and the river. it has to disappear because of the expansion of the port, causing loads of protest. most of the inhabitants have left now, leaving the houses empty... most of the doors are open and the village is slowly turning into a graffiti festival (with some great pieces) right before going back. |

thanks. the town had quite a creepy vibe. it was almost completely deserted: no cars, people, shops. all the public places and gardens were wild, with plants taking over. quite the background for something scary. apparently, at this moment there are eleven houses still owned by people living in them. in august 2009 84 people still lived there, most of them sold their house to the state and paid rent to stay there. |

It is very cool. It's sad to see a town deserted. So that is where the nuclear power plants are.

well the funny thing is that it doesn't really have anything to do with the power plant... that came there after the village existed. it's all about expanding the haven and building new places for the ships to go to and get more industry.

i guess it could get quite dangerous, especially when you go into houses. most of them are filled with debris and old stuff. they used to have a problem with people breaking into the houses and living there but now there's more police supervision. we did find a few matresses here and there and one of the residents had three german sheperds running around. |
