this is amazing news. I am really excited.

2016's been weird for me for hip hop. Basically, a few REALLY great albums and then a bunch that haven't held my interest.

Ok, due to some less than optimal circumstances, I found myself living in an area with a FUCKLOAD of white people whp listen to country music a little over a year ago. I can tell you with full confidence that I have never heard the words "Kevin's Gates" said out loud in person by ANYONE.

I think your need to check your sources. White country fuckers still love Eminem. In fact, they seem tlike be almost stuck in a time capsule where Eminem is the only rapper that matters. (Got into it in a friendly way with a co-worker about Em last spring... he was downright shocked to learn that I, a hip-hop fan, didn't like Eminem! He actually said, "You don't like Eminem? I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that before." ... so... yeah... time capsule)

Kevin Gates is good enough and skilled enough to build an underground fan base, and his first major label album was a fairly big hit. I think if he followed Islam up quickly with a really strong record a la Long.Live.A$AP or Section80, he could potentially have a nice solid few years of mainstream success ahead of him.

Plus Chance namedropped him on "Angels" so...

Honestly, the "white people love Kevin Gates" thing was a meme on Twitter. Not sure if it holds any credibility. But he's actually the most streamed artist in the South, believe it or not..

As far as hip-hop goes, so far I got TLOP, Coloring Book, the TDE releases (Isaiah, Schoolboy, untitled unmastered) and Danny Brown (which admittedly I've only heard once) on top of everything.

Now I'm waiting for A Tribe Called Quest to join this list.

But a damn good year or hip-hop the likes of which we haven't seen since 2013, yup.

There's still been a fuck ton of albums that seemed alright for a minute just because they didn't suck completely (remember that Bas album I tried to get you all to listen to and you never did? Probably just as well) but with EXCELLENT albums by Kanye, Chance and Danny and some really fucking good ones by Isaiah, Frank, Schoolboy, Kendrick, Travi$, Keith.... yeah, it's been something.

The fact that we're going to have new A$AP Mob AND fucking ATCQ albums in the best 2 weeks is almost too much.

I really fucking wish Pusha had dropped King Push, the stubborn fucker, but ... meh. Maybe he's just waiting for the optimal time. Darkest Before Dawn kinda got swallowed up by its mid-December release.

Pusha should wait until next year.. honestly, I think J. Cole's next album should be interesting. I read he recorded some of it in Jamaica at the same studio Lauryn recorded Miseducation. It's probably gonna have some reggae influence.

'Course I hate Drake, and I don't think anyone can argue that Jay Z is truly still "the king" (obviously that's Kanye and has been for many years, much as I love Jay) but he gets that Kendrick and Chance are at the forefront of the youth movement. He is correct. I'll bet he likes Push too, but doesn't want to openly admire such a druggy persona.

Interesting that he's known Chance since he was wee. I didn't realize that Chance's dad was the State Director in Illinois. Damn!
