At least seven people have died in Ivory Coast after clashes between soldiers and supporters of Alassane Ouattara - one of two men claiming to be president of the country.
In the main city of Abidjan, soldiers fired on crowds, and gun battles broke out near the hotel where Mr Ouattara has stayed since disputed elections.
The army also battled former rebels further north in the country.
The military is loyal to Mr Ouattara's rival Laurent Gbagbo.
But former rebel group the New Forces (FN) controls the north of the country, and is loyal to Mr Ouattara.
Both men claim to have won the election, and each has declared himself president.
The UN, which backs Mr Ouattara's claim, has urged calm.
Shooting 'all over' But on Thursday afternoon, the violence appeared to be spreading, with reports emerging of unrest away from Abidjan.
New Forces fighters apparently tried to storm positions held by the military near the town of Tiebissou, just south of the ceasefire line agreed in 2003 to end the country's year-long civil war.

The sides exchanged fire and civilians fled the town, according to reports, but there were no confirmed casualties.
Meanwhile in Abidjan, soldiers and police were standing guard at almost every major road junction.
Violence broke out in several parts of the city as security forces tried to prevent crowds from gathering.
Mr Ouattara's supporters had planned to take over state media channel Radio Television Ivorienne (RTI), which has been broadcasting reports praising Mr Gbagbo since the disputed election.
But early on Thursday, they clashed with security forces, who opened fire on the crowds.
Separately, in the south of the city, gun battles erupted between soldiers who control the area and former rebels who are guarding the Golf Hotel, where Mr Ouattara has been based since the election.
"There is shooting all over the place, there is artillery, there are explosions," a witness told Reuters news agency.

 

Mr Ouattara's supporters, including his nominated prime minister Guillaume Soro, were trying to leave the hotel compound and march to the TV station when fighting broke out.
Kandia Camara, a spokesman for Mr Ouattara, told the BBC that they were coming under attack.
US officials said the US embassy, which is near the Golf Hotel, had been hit by an "errant rocket-propelled grenade" during the battle, but no-one was injured.
At least seven people were confirmed dead across the city in violence related to the dispute. Demonstrators and activists said many more had died.
Earlier in the day, international prosecutors said they would bring legal proceedings against anyone accused of causing deaths.
And UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's spokesman warned that "those who incite or perpetrate violence, and those who use the media for that purpose... will be held accountable for their actions".
He reiterated that the UN, which has about 10,000 peacekeepers in the country and is helping to guard the Golf Hotel, wanted Mr Gbagbo to stand down.
The trouble stems from last month's run-off election, which the Electoral Commission said Mr Ouattara won by 54.1% to 45.9%.
Mr Gbagbo refused to admit defeat, and the Constitutional Council then annulled some results from the north and declared Mr Gbagbo the winner.

It definitely seems to be a zeitgeist thing. There's a real mood of protest right now, the extent of which I don't think I've experienced before. It's far bigger than the anticapitalist protests of a few years ago - even though I think they probably provided the model for what we're currently seeing. What's also interesting is the commitment of the protestors to simply go on and on. It obviously remains to be seen if they do but I'd certainly say the UK government atleast is becoming quite worried about the prospect of regular riots in its cities. It's a massive financial cost in terms of policing (which is itself faced with massive cuts). Right now, the British media are primarily against the protestors but I suspect that it'll only take for a fifteen year old middle class schoolkid to die in a kettle for the possibility of a sizable backlash from the newspapers.

Murdoch owns two newspapers and a satellite TV channel in the UK. His main TV rivals are the BBC and ITN (both of which have more viewers than Murdoch's Sky). He owns the Sun, which is the country's bestselling newspaper and tends to be a symbol of all that's wrong with the UK press - shallow, sensationalist, gossip-ridden - and The Times, which I personally quite like, in spite of its clear right wing sympathies. Personally, I'd say Murdoch's power in the UK, while a problem, is slightly overplayed. There are plenty of popular newspapers available that aren't affiliated with him which, when combined, span most of the political spectrum. It's perfectly easy to read a newspaper and watch 24 hour TV news broadcasts that haven't in any way been touched by Murdoch.

Where his real impact is felt is more in the realms of sports coverage, with Sky virtually owning the premier league: dictating games scheduling to maximise its profits from covering key live games (which viewers have to pay for, either as a subscription or via hefty one-off payments). To be honest, though, if you're not a big football fan, Murdoch has far less influence (besides the political importance of which party The Sun endorses) than is widely thought. That's massively debatable, though.

On the point of the police joining the protestors, it'll never happen, no matter how deep the cuts to their budget. What I can foresee though is the police 'strategically' sending out a skeleton show of strength during a key protest in order to highlight their situation. They'll never explicitely switch sides though. The nearest we've gotten to that was during the miners strike in the 80s when police officers were brought in from areas outside those from the affected regions to avoid the possibility of local sympathies.

In both of the two most respected global rankings of universities, the University of California system supplies at least 10% of the top 50 institutions worldwide. In the Academic Ranking of World Universities put out by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (usually referred to as the Shanghai index), seven of the UC's 10 campuses rank in the top 50. In Britain's Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the UC system has five campuses in the top 50 with a sixth four notches lower. This is an extraordinary achievement for a publicly financed system of higher education, particularly for one that was founded just a century ago.

If we add in the three private California universities (Caltech, USC and Stanford) also in the Shanghai top 50, California is arguably the heaviest-hitting state in any league of higher education. To find something comparable, you would have to aggregate the combined performance of the entire Northeastern United States. Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York together have produced precisely as many Shanghai top 50 institutions as California. And they have done so with the head start of an extra century or more of development, with the resources of a combined population base close to twice California's and, of course, with vast amounts of private-pocket financing.

The combined endowments of the 10 top-50 institutions on the East Coast top $80 billion. The West Coast's 10 top-ranked universities have a combined endowment of just over $21 billion, or about one-fourth of what their East Coast counterparts have amassed. Moreover, Stanford alone accounts for more than half of the endowment money held by the West Coast's top universities.

In other words, in terms of bang for the buck, the efficiency of California's university performance is staggering. Only a few state institutions in the Northeastern United States make it into the Shanghai top 50. All the others are plushly upholstered private institutions.

The only competition to California's performance comes from Maryland or perhaps plucky Illinois. Maryland boasts two top-50 Shanghai institutions. Beleaguered by even more hard-pressed state finances than our own, Illinois fields three top-50 institutions in both rankings. If California fields one premier university for every 3.7 million inhabitants, Maryland outcompetes us (one for each 2.85 million), while Illinois gives us a run for the money (one per 4.2 million). Among the states of the Northeast listed above, there is one first-class university for every 5.6 million people.

Looking abroad for our peers, the closest competition comes from Britain, but it is a fairly distant second. The British have but five ranking institutions, produced from a population that is well over 50% larger than California's. Were California an independent country, the only nation that would outrank it in the number of its premier universities would be the rest of the United States.

In California, our universities are a point of pride. But perhaps we do not recognize just how remarkable they actually are. California's private institutions are doubtless praiseworthy too. But without the extraordinary accomplishments of the UC system, they would not be part of what is an unprecedented achievement. Today we face the prospect of cutting into the muscle and bone of this venerable institution and hobbling a remarkable creature that has taken half a century of care, investment and tending to bring to magnificence. It is worth taking a moment to ask ourselves how much the imperatives of the current budget shortfall justify cutting back one of the true splendors of Californian civilization.

the biggest shame is that the UC/CSU system out-competes the world, including the UK, and yet California is going to inevitably gut it and let it fend for themselves to the wolves, I used to be proud to be a California public higher education alumni, now it is a bit selfishly embarrassing considering the current fate of future students. How can I honestly look my college-prep students in the eye and tell them to hope to get a future out of university when their universities no longer care about the future to begin with?

Katrina? Did that even happen? I remember a video of some " looters" looking for water and food in a walmart and there was a cop also walking around looking for batteries for her flashlight. at the same, the cops were killing nonwhites trying to leave New Orleans. I guess I do remember Katrina.
