I've mostly concluded that both sides of the argument sought to pass over the metaphysical question in silence. However, the argument came down to a binary opposition: the pre-existing notion of a God or the denial of that notion. In all, a classic case of confusion between the signifier, the signified, and the idea that bridges the two.
