James Joyce's 'A Portrait of The Artist as a Young Man' is very life affirming if you're a young man. I would say it encourages strength and independence.

Ripley has just sent me a shitload of her/his poetry. I'm going to recommend that she reads some William Carlos Williams. I don't like William Carlos Williams but I thought that was closest thing stylisticly to her poems, and recommending any poet to them is probably a good thing to get them educated.
