I like bread rather a lot; in the case of sandwiches, I think people concentrate too much on the filling with the result that the choice of bread is neglected. A sorry state of affairs, as bread maketh the sandwich.
I haven't tried too many GErman breads, but I do like Roggenbrot, so that gets my vote. In Chester, a little Polish food shop has opened recently, run by a very nice Polish couple, so we've been trying Polish breads. Very nice, they are, especially Polski Chleb, which is excellent as a kind of miniature open sandwich with mature cheese and relish.

I'm not hip to German bread.
We have a Lithuanian bakery here that I've been to a few times, good stuff there. Stuff along the lines of the Polish stuff Hip Priest mentioned. Of course you can't beat this... Thats right, Russian Rye, comrades! |

If you know more than 5 types for bread and what the difference is, you are a rich elitist bastard. Period. I think it even says that on Wikipedia somewhere.

My German is a little sloppy:
Ich weiB nicht zu viele um Deutsches brot oder Deutsches essen, aber ich weiB Bratwurst ist die Scheiss. Translation: I don't know much about german bread or food, but I know Bratwurst is the shit. |

Oh my god, I can't beleive people are still arguing over German bread. I used to be a German bread fan many years ago, but their output just isn't up to scratch these days. I think they're trying to appeal to too wide a market.
Portuguese bread is where it's at these days. |
