Not as great as With Every Heartbeat or Dancing on my own... she is great, but I'm not sure that's the song I'd play to introduce her. I saw Sophie Ellis-Bextor last weekend supporting Erasure: this was simply incredible.

Is it even worth my registering distaste with that sentiment?

Do it, Glice! Register away, please.
I'm indifferent to Bjork. I like some songs, I quite enjoyed her early shit (Tappi Tikarass, if that's how you spell it). But lately her material is high on concept, very low on actual pleasing sonic results. |

Ha! You've called me on a rhetorical device, well done.
No, I just think that 'Is Bjork the last great pop innovator?' can only ever be the sort of thing people that don't really like pop would say. I'm not saying that Gwen Stefani is pop's John Cage, but... .well, she's been a lot more interesting in the last 10 years than Bjork has (to me at least) and has managed to shunt a few tunes in. I prefer Bjork, in most ways... but it's ridiculous to pre-suppose that pop is a spent force creatively, especially as Reynolds reference points all seem to be 30+ years old. NB I'm not defending or exalting Stefani - I'm not bothered either way, was just a name at near-random.

ALSO: Kukl weren't very good. Sugarcubes, except a couple of tunes on lifes tooo good, weren't very good. It wasn't until about 13 years into her adult career Bjork 'became' Bjork as we know her. Comparing Bjork at however old she is now to MIA or Gaga is just ridiculous.

Bjork has two, maybe three memorable songs. She's good at finding interesting people to collaborate with, but ultimately the lack of hooks and her unbearable voice make them sound like over-mannered guests in a house where the hostess is watching your every move to the point you're terrified if a spontaneous fart will force its way out of your anus.

There are no more than about 4 artists who have kept me interested in their music throughout their career and Bjork is definitely one of them. I'm talking about her solo career of course (see Glice's comments on KUKL and Sugarcubes).
Comparing her to somebody like Lady Gaga is ludicrous. Stick Gaga with other pop dullards (Madonna is as good as any for comparison - or indeed Gwen Stefani). |

She made a handful of arguably great songs (Birthday, Deus, Venus as a Boy) and definitely had a knack for choosing the right collaborators at the right time but I just think she ran out of ideas pretty quick. Plus she's an irritating little shit.

I think she knows that she's full of shit and spews BS out of pure spite and self-amusement. I'm always confused when I encounter Bjork worshippers. I mean, c'mon, she's married to MATTHEW BARNEY. Anyone who marries someone responsible for Cremaster Cycle is suspect. Picture this: Bjork giving Barney-hubby a laxative so he can pull more conceptual slop from his rectum, drinkin' mimosas and brunchin' on some smoked eel in her castle with Marina Abramovic while Antony Hegarty warbles out another torch song and fiddles with a Tenori-On.

Nothing like what Genteel's asking for but I'm full-on in love with this right now. A perfect pop record, in my book
