Your all missing the point of the quote.
Because Malmus indulges in irony, non sequitors, word play, etc., however much we may like Pavement records (and I do a whole lot), there isn't the "personal meaning" that is the Smashing Pumpkins way of being. That's all. Pavement=entertaining, SP="meaningful" That being said, I'll take Pavement over SP's "message" any fuckin' day of the week. |

The Smashing pumpkins are hardly "meaningful." Great band, but it was just phony angst!

my boredom has outshined the sun. It's so dumb.......... I just want to have some little fun
Festers quest. What a shitpile of a game that was. It had sounds, music and enemies ripped off from blaster master, horrible controls, and it was fucking impossible. I can't believe Sunsoft made it, they had some of the best for the nes and snes ( that would explain the blaster master stuff ) |

my sentiments exactly. I never really gave a fuck what Billy was singing about, cause it was mostly annoying angsty bs ( although rhinocerous had pretty cool lyrics ). But I'll always love that music. Pisces Iscariot and Siamese Dream go together like pizza and soda. Gish was excellent too. Snail should have been a hit of theirs. |

Oh, I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly. Fucking Pavement SONG TITLES are more more interesting than "The world is a vampire" for example, only they're more elliptical. I guess "personal expression" is not related to quality. Morrissey lyrics don't bother me, but Corgan's do. They equally have their hearts on their sleeves, but Moz has the benefit of also having a brain in his head (as well as a sense of humor). High quality can come from anywhere, the "surreal" or the "heartfelt," Michael Stipe's murmurs or Lennon's cry for his dead mother. |

Smashing Pumpkins were really fucking good in almost everything they ever did. I have yet to get into pavement, but from what I have heard they are an entirely different thing.
Billy Corgan may be a dick, but he's a talented dick. He and Jimmy Chamberlaine can really bring a song to life.
