I saw SY play on Brighton Beach in '86. This was the one where Psychic TV should have headlined but didn't show so SY filled that slot and That Petrol Emotion opened. Been hooked on SY ever since!

I was at the "legendary" L7 used tampon-throwing incident (Reading, 1992):

I've seen plenty of shows where a group was unknown and went on to be legendary.

As for shows that received notoriety and later mention in the press for the event themselves - the only one that comes to mind for me is Nirvana at the University of WA Hub Ballroom when they got banned for smashing their equipment. When they became the most popular band in the world, that got mentioned a lot in the press. It was a good set, not the best I'd seen them play, but still pretty damn good.

Like atari, I saw My Bloody Valentine and Dinosaur Jr on that same tour - that scores me 'cred' points...right?

Nothing legendary by any means, but my first big show I went to was RHCP with Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam opening and nobody knew who they were. I thought Pearl Jam were some random local band.

1.) Saw Johnny Cash. He was already a legend, tho'.

2.) Saw White Stripes open for Pavement in 2000 or so. Everyone was yelling, giving Jack the finger. Gauran-fucking-tee the same people now say with braggadocio, "Oh yeah. I saw the Stripes back in the day. Before you poseurs heard of them." Assholes.

I saw Spiritualized with The Jesus and Mary Chain in 1992.
Spiritualized were first on the bill and got about 25 minutes to play, most of which was "Shine A Light." I drove 8 hours to see them, and it was fantastic. Curve followed, and were extremely limp IMO; then again, I was never much of a fan. The Mary Chain seemed very tired and not into it, and I have seen them do better as well. I think they had been on the road a good while by then.

And there's my much-mentioned Sonic Youth supporting Jesus & Mary Chain in 1986.

I think Ascension provoked a similar reaction when they supported SY as well.

They're still going but they were fairly lame when I saw them supporting Keiji Haino. That was one of the ace-est things I've seen but I don't know about legendary...a rare UK show for Haino though and it was the show where he was heckled by a Wire writer (allegedly...well, he was definitely heckled and I was told the guy was Ben Watson who writes, or used to write, for The Wire)

that's the same tour that I saw! TJAMC just got off of a lallapalooza tour (back when it actually toured). and yeah, I'd see them do much better. I was just really stoked to hear both of them play at the same time.

I think that I was the only person in the crowd who really cared that Spiritualized were on stage. I thought that the set was too short, but was happy that I was getting to see them. I've seen them play twice since then, and despite it's brevity it may still be my favorite. they played this track list: http://www.sonicyouth.com/gossip/sho...&postcount=115

good times.

I was at the last Creed show, ever. Where Scott Stapp was fucked up and left the stage after a couple of songs. It was the most entertaining thing that could have happened at the show.
why was i there? my dad liked Creed and was looking for someone to go with and i was willing because it was free and local h was opening.

I was at the Phish show on Halloween (they loved halloween almost as much as New Years and also July the Fourth.)

It was 1996.

They played "Remain in Light" by the Talking Heads.

My vote was for "Purple Rain" by Prince.

I became instantly the biggest Talking Heads fan of ALL TIMES!

Thanks Phish, sorry you never played "Daydream Nation" like I suggested EVERY SINGLE YEAR!
