The Mars Volta fans. Even before I heard a single note of them I was disgusted just because of their fans ("ho come on if you don't like The Allmighty Mars Volta it's because you're an ignorant, you have to listen to them 50 times in a row without any sound around you but with a calculator and a rule to understand this powerful music, plus Omar is the best guitarist the whole universe has ever known his fingers are gold his solos makes me happy for the rest of the week it's too beautiful it's intelligent music for clever people and if you don't like it you don't even deserve my attention, you'll see when their new album is going to be out that you're fool")

But that's why young teens are so stupid, now. They listen to The Mars Volta.

I'm sorry, the correct answer is Dave Mathew's Band fans.
Although ICP fans may be equal. My home town is like the juggallo capital of the world. |

Steve Albini fans? Damn, I want to meet some "Steve Albini fans"; I bet they got some good taste in music!
Anyway.. 1. Dir En Grey fans (this can probably speak for most of the vis kei scene, but...) 2. Mindless Self Indulgence fans 3. Magik Markers fans though, not speaking of bands for a moment, the most annoying fanbase is Adult Swim fans. Sure, I love me some Super Milk Chan and 12 Oz. Mouse but the hardcore Adult Swim fans are the most annoying shitheads in the world. And, no, there is no such thing as Mars Volta fans. There are "people who hate Mars Volta" and "people who don't hate Mars Volta that much". There aren't fans. |

Oh, and something else.
Speaking as a "non-judger of technical guitar playing usually", is Omar even that good of a guitar player? I know he can come up with a few catchy riffs, especially in At the Drive In, but I don't really hear anything in his guitar playing that's THAT technically proficient; I just hear a guy who favors long solos and owns 150 fx pedal. I always found it funny that the most talented members of the Mars Volta -- their drummer and their bass player (Flea or otherwise) -- are the ones who never get mentioned. |

MCR fans. Anti-MCR fans. Emo fans. Anti-MCR fans. A great many hardcore fans. A great many indie fans. Jazz fans. Fans period.
Billy Bragg fans, B&S fans, Dylan fans, Beatles fans, especially Manics fans. Funnily enough, most u2 fans I know are incredibly nice people. Fans generally. You might note I like some of these bands, but it's the category of fan fans rather than people that just like things.

pantera fans, slayer fans, beatles fans, oasis fans, coldplay fans, steve vai fans, a great number of pseudo sonic youth fans (the poser kind you see at sonic youth gigs), yngwie malmsteem fans, arctic monkeys/razorlight/etc etc.. fans.

Well Post-Hardcore is just a more academic word for Emo. Although many would argue there is a difference, in common usage its usually used to describe a slightly more refined and less crude type of emo music. In Cardiff the south wales valleys music scene is usually refered to as Post-Hardcore. I'm not taking a cheap shot at emo culture, more the dyed in the wool worshipers that take a great amount of pride in being willfully blind to the validity of any other type of music. Its the general arrogance that annoys me. I like to keep an open mind and listen to lots of different things, it makes life far more exciting. I'm not sure people who live outside of South Wales can truely appreciate what I mean.

I've noticed this too. Although I wasn't really surprised that they were nice, I was more surprised that they were actually a level-headed group of people. Strange. Diehard fans of Neutral Milk Hotel would get my vote for most irritating.

that is odd. post-punk was music that took the elements of punk sound and attitude and vibe and created new music out of that (J&MC, the cure, siouxsie, etc) post-rock is bands that take the elements of rock music and create a whole new music out of them (GSYBE!, Mogwai, slint, etc) would not post-hardcore be music that takes elements of hardcore and then creates new music out of it, a la unsane, shellac, helmet, fugazi etc? emo music came from rites of spring and bad religion and bands that "had feelings" about things I guess... I dont know. just curious.

The most bovinely moronic fans I've encountered in recent months are Kreator fans - a real testosterone-and-moron fest. Apart from that, most fans of music I find to be pretty OK/harmless.

Velvet Underground fans--at least that branch of VU fans that started appearing in the '80s; you know what I mean, those ignorant little snotbags from our high school and university days who couldn't make it with the jocks, couldn't make it with the brainiacs, couldn't make it with the punks, metalheads, goths, etc., so they would hang about dressed in black, pretending to be more intelligent than what they were, pretentious as hell--just a little close-minded social club, complete with inside jokes that they thought no one else understood (I always had news for them, and so much more). You could always tell the real Velvet Underground fans, the truly intelligent ones, from these little fakes who used them as a crutch and social emblem because the real ones also liked The Doors, The Pink Floyd, Leonard Cohen, The Stooges, MC5, The Who--you know, all the classic acts who were "too butch and hetero" for the snooty, precious Velvet 'fans'. The only major act from the '80s/early '90s that they dug (or at least pretended to dig) was Morrisey--with or without The Smiths. They could emulate his most annoyingly eccentric and whiney ways quite adeptly, as well. The saddest thing about it is the fact that both The Velvet Underground and The Smiths made some great records, but for me--like a lot of people I meet in my age category--the virtues of the music have been substantially eclipsed by memories of those conceited, close-minded little cliques who based their social status on their identification with the bands in question.
Then there are those awfully annoying AC/DC fans, who seem to have never listened to--or even heard of--anything but those rowdy boys from Down Under. Throw in those gen-X Alice Cooper and Kiss fans who never started listening until they were in their mid to late teens in the mid '80s (about 5 to 7 years after the rest of us had stopped paying attention), and you have what's pretty much my pettest of peeves when it comes to rock fans. "It's not the bands I hate / It's the fans..." --'Coax Me' (from the Smeared album), Sloan, 1994 |
