them: what music do you like?
me: rock them: what kind? me: weird rock, pretty much anything rock and some other genres, but mainly rock. them: you like punk? me: yeah, green day and fall out boy aren't punk, they are pop, bad pop at that. i like good pop too. (alternatively) them: what music do you like? me: everything. them: everything? me: yeah them: so you like -insert ridiculous kind of music-? me: i don't listen to it a lot, or don't like most of it, but i do like when i hear a good song done in that style. you'd be surprised how many people actually want to know about music they miss out on because they don't get to investigate and find it; also, i have been very surprised when people tell me what they are into. ohh and this one for winning the wrath of the other person in the conversation: them: what music are you into? me: mostly finnish and japanese stuff, you wouldn't know about them. |

In the past I tried to come up with some all-encompassing answer to this question. I get asked this quite often and I can't wait until the time comes when people stop caring. Now I just tell them that I don't really like music all that much, and they tend to get outraged, which is an interesting thing to watch. I keep this up for as long as I can, until someone either gives me away or I can't keep a straight face any longer. Then it's, "I'm just kidding, I actually do like music," and at that point they are so relieved to hear that I do, in fact, enjoy music, that they stop caring about what kind of music it is that I prefer.

I remeber I worked in a movie theater an this scene guy asked me what music I listen to.
Him: What do you listen to? Me: Mostly 80's alternative rock stuff. Him: Like who? Me: Pixies, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr (I was going for the biggest names) Him: I've never heard of any of those. Me: Okay. And I left it at that. He obviously wasn't going to delve into further questions if the bands didn't have "Blood," "Leaves," etc. in them. |

With me, it mostly goes like that:
Them: "So, what kind of music do you like?" Me: "Mostly experimental kind of music, nothing 'normal' " Them: "Ah, ok" (silence) So exciting, isn't it? I'm the master of conversation.

that's pretty much how it goes in every conversation I have about music. I find that most people aren't really into music and don't like talking about it - even people im in a band with. This is why we have to know what britney spears vagina is doing this week. People are into the superficial and i question sometimes if anyone has felt anything beyond what i felt for Papa Roach when I was 11. |

It was also during my breaks while I was reading a book of Richard Feynman. Explaining that was more depressing. |

Oh, one more thing comes to my mind. At highschool I used to be a real huge fan of Radiohead. Once a guy came to me and asked me what music I liked so I said Radiohead.
And he was like: "Ready or not? That song by Fugees? Yes, that one's perfect!"

The people that say "everything" are always fucking idiots. Even more idiotic: "Everything except country and rap". Fucking idiocy. I always like to follow that up by asking "Do you like much grindcore/harsh noise/brutal prog?"

I don't consider indie a musical genre. That's way too fucking broad.
I just say I listen to a little of this and a lot of that. |

This is my most hated response, and it's a common one too. When people say this, I end the conversation. NUFF SAID. Usually for me it's either: them: "What music do you listen to?" me: "Stuff from every genre. But I'm very picky about it" them: "Oh, like what?" me: *name a few current favorites from different genres* them: I don't know any of those [end of conversation] or if I don't like the person: them: "What music do you listen to?" me: "Merzbow performing dubstep renditions of 1-Speed Bike's last performance." them: "huh?" [end of conversation]

Or you could just answer their question with another question:
"What kind of music do you listen to?" "Does it matter?" Whatever response, I usually try to avoid naming anyone in particular, because then they want me to describe the type of music they play, which is never a good idea. I'm shit at describing how music sounds.
