i decided to stop using the term krautrock, because as far as music goes, what does a group like cluster have in common with ash ra tempel? and how can you say amon duul II are more kraut than neu or faust, how does a statement like that make any sense?

I've taken to saying "early 70s German music" a lot of the time.
I almost use the term "krautrock" more often to describe modern groups with that influence (from wherever) than I do in reference to the original German bands.

I said that because I hear far more KR bands from that period that sound like them than I do bands like Can, Neu or Faust. Amon Duul may not have been the most groundbreaking KR band, but they're arguably the most representative. And I stress the word arguably there.

If you only stick to Yeti and Phallus Dei, perhaps.

What I love about Krautrock is that no two bands sound exactly alike, unless they share members. While this rules, it's hard to recommend records that definte the Krautrock sound.

I think starting with Faust IV is probably wise. Can's first few albums and the Can DVD are also probably good places to start. Everyone always brings up Neu!, but I think that all of Neu's releases pale in comparison to Harmonia's first release Musick Von Harmonia; everything about Neu! is present in Harmonia excpet it's all done with synth's and it's just magic. Amon Duul II fucking rules hard; Yeti and Tanz Der Lemming are my favorite. I've always thought of Xhol Caravan as being waaay underrated; I would look into their album Electrip.

It's a fun genre, get into it.

for those of you who have this TV channel:

there's a documentary on krautrock/70's german rock that just started on Arte... it's called "Roboter essen kein Sauerkraut"...

and after that there's a movie called Deadlock with a soundtrack from Can... I have never seen that one but wanted to...

If you want originals, you will pay through the nose. I once sold an original copy of Can's "Monster Movie" for over $1800.00.

what the fuck???

Ive got 3 original can records (vinyl) in my collection, the others are cd.
is there a place where I can look what they would be worth it?

Hmm... the documentary wasn't great.

Predictably, I liked the sections about the bands I like, and was very bored during the sections about bands I don't like... The problem is that they were basically doing one band after the other (5 minutes for Amon Düül, 5 minutes for Can, 5 minutes for Scorpions, etc.) so I always seemed to be waiting for someone I like to show up - there was a very long section in the second half with only bands I was not interested in - or i was frustrated when someone I like disappears from the screen after a few images/words/sounds.

And the bastards did not mention Faust at all!

Good thing I had something to read at the same time.

Here you are. Dug it out because I played it last Saturday and it is that good. Hope the link's still alive.

There's a lot more here than the Peel Sessions, but you should buy all the available stuff, you cheap bastids!

I picked up an EXACT reissue (most likely not legit), down to the German Liberty labels, recently for $16.00. By "recently" I mean a year and a half ago.
I can hook you up with a German or UK original though. The UK one has different cover.

Haha, when I first looked at this thread I thought it said Kid Rock; I'm glad it didn't...

I love me some krautrock, but anything I think I would suggest has already been covered - Can, Amon Duul II, Faust, etc...

Ash Ra Tempel is good, and Cluster... I didn't read them all so I don't know if these were mentioned yet...

(YAY for elipsis!...)

I will say, somebody who has an extensive krautrock lp collection is more imressive to me than maybe any other genre of music.
