Since Everyneurotic answered the query so well, I'll go with the PF flow...

www.loobiecore.com/thewall.mp3

if this were the original version of the song, then rest assured that nobody would remember "The Wall" all these years later. Sebadoh are alright; the intensly lo-fi weed=forestin is great, but indie rockers should really refrain from making complete asses out of themselves like this if they can help themselves at all.
I will agree though that The Wall is overblown & it is the hallmark of the end of Pink Floyd's best music, although it has its moments.

Early (The) Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett & early Pink Floyd without Syd Barrett are both great.

The 10 best Pink Floyd albums:

Meddle
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Wish You Were Here
A Saucerful of Secrets
Animals
The Dark Side of the Moon
Ummagumma
Atom Heart Mother
The Wall
Soundtrack from "More"

pro studios will always listen to their mixes in mono to check the levels of each individual channel in the mix, this is because it really gives you a good idea of balance of the frequency spectrum, it also gives you a good idea of what you will hear on a crap mono radio. i recommend this to anyone struggling with their mix downs in their home studios because it is a great way to learn how to balance you instruments with in a mix, particularly drums. there is the struggle of choice in the pro production industry whether you go for the highest quality broadcast systems available or simplify to reach a greater audience. however this is not such a huge issue as it was ten years ago with the price of computer surround speakers being available for the price of two cds.

stereo, 5.1 and up allows you to physically move the signal from the centre (where your mono all sums to) to anywhere you want in the physical space of your speaker setup. this also allows you to spread the same signal over multiple output channels such as left centre right sub rear left and rear right.

in the live pro audio world, what is happening is numerous mono signals are input into the console and the engineer then makes the decision where these signals should be sent in either the stereo field and beyond. i have worked on professional theatrical productions where i have had up to 24 different places to be able to output signal to. this is quite complex but can be exceedingly satisfying to hear what can be achieved in a live situation.

i hope this gives a bit more insight into the world of audio and answers your question at the same time.

cool shit terminal...

maybe its just me i'm just a little suprised that one does not understand the difference between mono and stereo... but thats just me...

anyways i have mono versions of a few things like the 1st 3 Hendrix albums, 'Axis Bold as Love' is amazing in Mono vs. Stereo... some of the Beatles mono versions i can do without. And i have a handful of Impulse! label Free Jazz albums in mono (John Coltrane, Roswell Rudd...etc)

technically all recordings are made of mono signals so it is quite feasible not understanding. there are few instruments that provide a stereo signal and the ones that do mostly are used in mono anyway.

One of the reasons Beatles mono mixes are so sought after is that the band themselves(mainly John and Paul)supervised these mixes, the stereo mixes were done by the recording staff.Get the White Album in mono if you can.Or even Revolver or Pepper. They are sonically superior to the stereo ones.

well thats not entirely true, the same thing could be coming out of each speaker and it still could be a stereo recording. to be different they speakers have to have different things, but to be stereo doesnt require different things.

since my post of the wall cover....

I have since listened to the wall, live. And i actually really liked it. I have regained my respect for most pink floyd that I had once abandoned when I started liking punk music. Syd Barret stills represents what I think is the best of pink floyd... but in the large scale of things syd barret's pink floyd is different animal form the band that continued. Which were normally pretty cool (see animals, darkside)... but the wall is like a disney soundtrack, and if i rmember correctly, the studio version sounds rather stiff.... but I retract any negative vibes I may've laid on the floyd. They aight.

Absolutely agree!! VU & Nico, all the way through, sounds better in mono than its stereo counterpart.
