oh shit man. then no question that's where you wanna go. just go to the right neighborhood, that's what you want.

i wouldn't live in albuquerque outside of nob hill or downtown-- or maybe this place i saw yesterday behind downtown that looks like it's an old industrial area being renovated. the ability to go out of your door & see humans that don't all look the same is great. having to "drive" to whatever place you really wanna be in kills the whole experience. really, don't compromise there.

Yeah, and that gets to the heart of my problem. Iowa City was like that, where I could virtually walk out my door and be part of a great mix of people and activity. Here I have a loop of a street to walk around and a bunch of tall pines. Pretty. Vacant.

Oh God, just the opposite for me. I'd go live in Germany again in a heartbeat. We were there from 84 to 87 and loved every minute.

Of course, we weren't in Berlin. We were near Koblenz, southwestern Germany. Beautiful.

Yeah, fucked up, indeed. Thanks for making me feel better! lol

Portland might almost be too big and too expensive, from what we've learned. To afford it, we'd fall into the trap again of looking for property out in the sticks. Wouldn't be in any better place than we are now.

I did make my wife promise that we'll live more "centrally" wherever we go next.

And I need to organize my work shit, look at what I procrastinated this week, file some UNPAID invoices, and think about all the work I need to make up next week. It's really hard to get anything done when Gilmore Girls comes on at 11 and the rest of the time, there's scintillating conversation about Heath Ledger and hot girls on the SY forum.

property out in the sticks is cool if you like eating at chain restaurants and spending your whole life at the walgreens/walmart.
I cannot stand it
I do not understand why people who work downtown in Hosuton where I work choose to live 1-2 hours commute away. makes no sense.

here is a map. my house is 8 miles from downtown houston, and on a good day it takes me 20 minutes to get to work. in the middle fo the night I can get from downtown to my house in 13 minutes. I have to live within 15 minutes of good restaurants and the museums

I get very melancholic when I think about my past. Where I lived, friends I made, good times we had.
I guess that a part of me stayed behind, when I left. Hard to deal with sometimes.

I can sympathize, Tok. Believe me. I don't think I'll get over moving away from Iowa City.

Rob, I'm envious, man. I'd love to be in that position. I don't go to Wal-mart and chains, though. I just have to drive like hell to get where I want. Downtown Columbia is a good 20 minute drive from my house, and that's where the stuff is--coffee shops, record store, museums, etc.

The weird thing is, nowhere in this whole goddamned town--nowhere!--is there a decent book store! It's all Barnes and Noble. And Columbia is a university town. Talk about FUCKED UP!

barnes and noble bought up all independent university bookstores in the mid 90's.

I was spoiled in Iowa City. The place has Prairie Lights, an indie book store that has thrived since the early 80s. Such a cool place.

http://www.prairielightsbooks.com/NA...?s=storei nfo

You could go there several nights a week and see great, famous novelists and poets, and hear them read. Heaven, I tell you.
