i know people who woodshed on their acoustic guitars for hours and they sound pretty great and all but can't help but find them souless and generic. when i pick an acoustic is to write a song or mess around with it. i do admire people like jack rose and john fahey, though. |

it's music to euthanise yourself to
it is nap time at the old folks home it is vacuous homilies to nature and stupid fucking generic feelings it is tepid bullshit masquerading as insightful lyricism it is best played by people who will never ever ever get a record contract true folk music is music of the people, of locals, or farmers and ranchers and working men and women. it is music of regional interest with history behind it. devandra bearfuck is just some stupid emo-looking cocksmear playing acoustic music for the "ladies"

But sometimes, you listen to Sonic Youth all day long and your ears start to hurt and you need to listen to Nick Drake or Bert Jansch or something, its all good
And lets not forget how much SY owe to Joni and David Crosby |

how much does sonic youth owe to david crosby and joni mitchell?
and how severely does that pale in comparison to what sonic youth owe to the velvets, john cage, chatha, branca, etc.? I find that old tired "sonic youth loves joni mitchell" bulshit wrongheaded. so lee sang a song with her name in it? so what? sonic youth is as far from folk music as Bach is.

haha, Thats a great clip TB. The version of that Devendra tune on the record is really kicking though
There is an interview somewhere where Thurston talks about how many tunings/chord shapes and song structures he stole from Joni without people noticing As for Crosby, they named a song after him, and O'Rourke talks about how much he loves Crosby in the Wilco book |

again, naming songs after people does not mean or in any way imply that musically they are some sort of influence.

I like Devendra alright, or did before the last record.
Ariel Pink's got some jams and a lot of crap. John Maus (a member of Ariel Pink's band) though, is the shit. |

Its funny people don't like the new Devendra, its what got me into him
I'm really glad he stopped with the vibrato. his voice is so much nicer without it and he can really croon on some of the new record. apparently they used Frank Sinatras actual spring reverb for it |

i just dont understand why anyone would still be making folk music, all the shit today just sounds like a nick drake but purposefully trying to be "weird" and therefore sounding incredibly stupid.
for the record, i love nick drake, and that is not a dig at him by any means.
