Same probably goes for Black Flag. But then again they released about eight albums in two years so quality was bound to fluctuate. |

Acid Mothers Temple. It's why I don't live in a freakin mansion with platinum taps on my alabaster sculpted, Yquem filled bathtubs.

It used to be Sonic Youth but that's gone now. I'll be downlaoding them all illegally 'cause there are more chances that they will be rubbish. I'd rather spend my money on other records.

I think the closest I came to buying music out of habit, rather than because I genuinely expected to hear something worthwhole, was with the Ramones a few years ago. I was buying albums like Animal Boy and Loco Live because I could, not because I wanted to.

The thing for me with SY is that I stopped 'liking' what they were putting out a while ago - although Nurse and Rather Ripped were definite low points. Saying that, I'll keep buying their stuff, although from now on it'll be more out of an interest in how they see themselves at a given time. I think Rather Ripped is an awful album, but it sort of fascinates me nonetheless - in some ways more than those of theirs I like. I have the same thing with Rolling Stones albums, which I always buy when they come out. A Different Light, for example, was never going to be a 'good' album, but what interests me is how they envisage themselves, and how they articulate that vision through their albums - however bad it may be. It's the exact same reason why I'm probably the only person in the world whose still vaguely excited about the eventual(?) release of Chinese Democracy. |

interesting thread!
although i'm not always enthralled by their latest records, i'd buy anything from the likes of sonic youth, malk & the jicks and modest mouse. anything released by liars, joanna newsom, tom waits are also bought without blinking an eye. there are probably more! |

Not anymore but used to be I'd mindlessly buy the following whether I really wanted them or not: Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Stones (a long time ago including their solo releases).

SY, if there's one, but I don't go after out of print shit or feel obliged to buy every SYR album etc.
The lack of money is pretty defining factor with this sort of stuff. |

Is that to give people time to forget how awful the last one was?

Exactly. But I'm willing to bet you never had to hear them to know that. I do admire your willingness to test the theory though. |

I was forced to buy a fan last week, as humidity levels reached silly levels. Never made me listen to Sebadoh though.

I only buy Sonic Youth albums and is the only band that keeps me searching for rare stuff or SYR or bootleg. All others bands are just fine... and I don't buy anything, I download it all. There's a lot of info on the net, so I take advantage of it.
