I think Rob handled the physiology aspect well, but this is something you really don't want to mess with. I don't think I could resist it. Burroughs wrote that doing a shot of heroin for the first time was like having an orgasm through your whole body. As wonderful as that is, he also relates you then spend the rest of your life trying fruitlessly to hit that spasm again. He also relates people who were addicts for years and maintained fine until the supply would run out - or the pigs would bust them - then their whole lives collapsed. I think the worst aspect of the drug these days are the fucking low life dirtbag scummers you have to deal with to get the drug. The purity is real good. I'm predicting a massive wave of heroin to hit the US if Obama gets elected. The Bushies have been hording tons of dope in Afghanistan since the occupation began and I predict they'll flood the inner cities with it, like they did in the 60's. You talk to people from the time and they'll tell you how the dealers used to give it away free to get people hooked. No one in their right mind wants to be a dopefiend. I had a friend in college who got raped by his dealers when he owed them money. Ugliness. Learn to fast and meditate. And shoot rifles. But don't do H. |

Rob's right about having enough money and the right support group meaning you can do it pretty much indefinitely.
I've tried it, thought I was Archie Shepp for about 15 minutes, then threw up. I didn't think people bought into the whole Rock n Roll thing enough to bother with it anymore. I thought it was just prostitutes and newspaper journalists that bothered these days. I was friends with a few serious addicts in the early 90s, when London's 'indie scene' had a similar influx of smack to the one it seems to be having now. A pathetic thing to watch really. |

i wasn't going to quit before i left but somehow someone talked enough sense into me to get some methadone and not be stupid about it. i did it for long enough to get physically addicted to it and be off in my little smackhead world and not give a flying fuck about anything. not too far gone, far gone enough to have perspective on the matter and i don't like motherfuckers interrogating me which is why i don't talk about it very openly. mostly it's none of your fucking business.

the main draw of heroin, for most of it's users, is not any euphoria you get, but that it numbs you, takes away the pain, whether emotional/physical/psychological. Kurt Cobain allegedly started doing heroin to kill the pain he had from his gastric ulcers which were eating up his stomach and intestines.
when life is all pain and hurt, something like heroin can be very very attractive. to quote Muddy waters "I'm a stick with my reefer, I ain't messin' round with no cocaine..."

i don't need to talk with anyone, it's not a problem for me right now because i don't feel threatened or violated by anyone or anything. i took care of my shit and that's that. i've done it since i quit and i'm sure i'll probably do it again because my brain is fucked up and i'll never learn.
