First it was music. Then, I used to collect video games, even ones I didn't like. Then, I used to collect movies. Nowadays, I don't give a shit. I'm generally not a very materialistic person anyway, so I've given away literally HUNDREDS of movies and cd's to friends and sold hundreds of games in the past year or so. I'm trying to just have the essentials of everything. I want to get it to a point where I can fit everything I own in 2 boxes... I'm already at a point in life where I think the only thing I need is my guitar.

seriously though, I collect "rocks"(gemstones, minerals, geodes, fossils, general earth junk, etc) and plants. Mostly succulents, but I'd love a whole collection of nepenthe, Because they're rad. I'd also really like a terrarium big enough for me to sit in, but, no room or money.

I used to collect weird stuff I found at work.
One time I found the pointed end of a dart. I haven't found anything really weird of late.

I used to be horrible about collecting. Science fiction books, comics, coins, records, all kinds of material shit.
Then about ten years ago I went through a phase of wanting to simplify and got rid of most of that. I started to realize that if I believed in the contents of a book, it would do much better after I'd read it out circulating than sitting on my bookshelf. Now, I collect masks since we wear them in the Dead Air Fresheners, and I try not to always have the same one on. But even then, it's mostly what's really cheaply acquired, and I probably only have ten or twelve total personally (though I'm still up for getting more). |

I used to collecting coins/money a lot about 6 or 7 years ago. I don't so much now, because it's hard to find cool stuff that isn't hella expensive.
Now I guess it's just books. I want to be able to devote one room in my (future) house as a library/study and I'm starting the outfitting now. At the given time, within 2 feet of me, I have 50 books.

Besides records, I collect books. Lots of books.
Tons of books and anything related to sonic youth.

I don't collect more than one kind of thing at any one time. That is, as a kid, I collected comic books and paperback novels--the comic books were DC and Marvel things from the 60s that would be worth hundreds today if they hadn't gotten destroyed in my parents flooded basement! I still have many of the paperbacks, though, mostly Man from UNCLE Ace Paperbacks, UNCLE digest magazines, and James Bond.
When I got interested in music in my teens, I abandoned comic books and started collecting records. That's been the only thing I've been serious about collecting ever since. I generally don't understand the collecting impulse, though, for most other things. With books and records, you re-use them--you re-listen to them, re-read them. I don't see the point with other objects, even things like baseball cards. Nevertheless, one lesson I have learned is that if you found something important enough to collect at one time, you shouldn't discard it. I've learned that from selling or trading a few of my records. I miss even the cheesy ones. I only did that a few times before I realized how much I would miss them.
