Electronic Body Music i have less of a problem with because it immediatly brings up to mind a certain type of band(hello Clock DVA,Nitzer Ebb etc etc.) whereas IDM has obviously been invented by people who have got problems with electronic music in general. What's that name of the DeRogatis cunt? Was it him?

well, there have surely been many exciting acts falling under category of "IDM" such as Boards of Canada, Autechre, Arovane, Phonem or the mighty mighty Chris Clark but I guess its energy has burnt out a couple of years ago.

i read this somewhere >>>-------> the name IDM was invented by some americans on an internet mailing list in the early/mid 90s, so it was neither critics, nor people who who had any involvement with dance music.
and i might be making this part up, i can't remember, but i think it was coined in reference to autechre. and bearing in mind that they were on the internet in the early 90s i would imagine they were probably connected to some kind of academic institution, or were geeks, or both. and being either academics or geeks they probably frowned on house or techno. plus americans tend to hate dance music and start ranting about disco whenever they hear something predominantly rhythmic.

I hate the term math rock. It's too broad. I only consider bands like Hella to actually be mathy. Their older stuff anyone, they're new stuff is sooooooooo IDM!

Just kidding.

Yeah i read all that stuff and i've always been fascinated as to why europe is generally a much more receptive continent when it comes to electronic music. The american disco bashing is a laughable thing since it is an american creation that should be treasured rather than laughed off.

Becuz as a whole, America tends to like things they've heard before.

Electronic music contains too many sounds people haven't heard before.

Therefore Americans don't like electronic music.

Well, electro, techno and house have been around for 20+ years and electronic music saturates advertising and mass media, so I don't know that this argument holds much water.

Thinking too much hurts. So the labels are so that people don't have to think for their music enjoyment and appreciation! Less thinking please!

that's a load of shit. americans love electronic music. the problem is that electronic music/dance music is treated a s very disposable in the usa, much more so than anyhere else. it is a soundtrack to dance to and the moment something new to dance to comes along it is discarded. the same thing happens to hip hop here but in a slower way.

i gues sit all lies in how we treat it. techno is techno (I am dating myself here)
I find it personally very dull. Unless there are many changes ansd bridges and varied beats , which is rare, each song is essentially a near endless repeat of the same loop.

i am just too huge a fan of actual instruments, not programmed sounds coming off of a CPU.
