i read about the kaoss pad a while back (maybe 4, 5 years? I dont really know how old they are) and it got some pretty shitty reviews, though they all said the touchpad was a really good way of controlling the sound, but the sounds themselves weren't particularly interesting. is this a newer version to the ones I read about? its definitely an interesting device, by the sounds of it it has a huge range.

Yeah, it's newer. I think the sounds are phenominal, and you can make some really trippy real-time panning effects. Still getting to know it.

Matt Bellamy from Muse has one of these built into his guitar just behind the bridge. You can hear it in it's proper use on Invincible off Black Holes and Revelations (the wierd spacey noise in the second verse). He also uses it to make a fuckload of random white noise (which is what Id use it for!) He controls the sound with a pick, but I think cos its built in he can only use one preset sound. He's got another one in his pedal board, which he uses for mixing in arious samples and sounds onstage live.
I gave one of these a go at my local guitar shop and I got lost in just making crazy shit noises! I turned it up real loud and just blasted this wailing alarm sound out across the shop (much to the assistants disproval). I think it was about £300 new in the shop, but I reckons £150 for second hand off the net would be a good price.

Thanks for the link Kegmama! To this day I think he is the most mindblowing guitar player I've ever seen in person (particularly when I saw him with Mike Watt in 95 playing what seemed to be two simultaneous parts on their cover of Tuff Gnarl).
Here's his from his site: |

You seem like the type of guy that would eat Ramen with beer and buttermilk mixed in. I get the impression you have or had slicked back hair a'la a miami drug dealer. I shouldn't fuck with you too much because we live in the same town and I think you're probably a fucking psycho. |

I just made an mp3 demo of the Kaoss Pad with two samples I made - It's pretty annoying and I will rep anyone who makes it through the whole thing. Listen with headphones if you can:

I'll give it a try.
I just make noise on my guitar, I need to practice more.
