This weekend was a fun one because the 19th annual Virginia Film Festival is being held. The theme this year is "Revelations."
In the past few years, we've had stars like Anthony Hopkins, Sigourney Weaver and Nicolas Cage (with his then newlywed wife Lisa Marie Presley (they had only been married a week or so when they hit town)). This year, Morgan Freeman, Robert Duvall, William Moseley & Liev Schriber were here. I missed more than I saw, however. I didn't go to Freeman and 10 items or Less, the world priemere of Jack Black's Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny movie (which I forgot was on Thurs night), Moseley and Narnia (sold out), and Duvall and The Apostle (sold out (seen it already)). I saw The Seventh Seal (on the big screen...one of Scorsese's faves), Jesus Camp (disturbing, but excellent) and Jim Bakker's son, Jay Bakker, (a nondenominational preacher) who was onhand to screen and discuss the first two episodes (of six) of a new reality series for Sundance Channel called One Punk Under God. It was pretty engaging and there's this one part where he's touring the decimated Heritage USA theme park. Roger Ebert is getting/has gotten out of the hospital now, but the festival wasn't all that great without him for me. I've attended shot-by-shot seminars of his on Vertigo, The Birds, Pulp Fiction and Blowup that were a blast. At the one for The Birds, we chatted for awhile about Blue Velvet and I gave him a ribbing for panning it. |
