^The 80's were a good time for music, I think.
I'm listening to The City Waites' Bawdy ballads of Old England.

people like to go on about the 80s like it was this horrible decade - well, it was, for the most part - but they don't realize that a lot of cool shit actually did come out of the 80s. you just have to look beyond guns n roses and poison and leggings and pink frost lipstick.

i'm not sure that people would appreciate what's under the facade though (ie, lydia lunch, sonic youth, scratch acid, birthday party, nick cave & the bad seeds, etc etc so on and so forth)

It's not just the 'alternative' stuff that made the eighties great, in my opinion, although it was certainly a golden age for that too.
Pop music has never been so diverse and intelligent as it was then. The charts had great stuff in them. And the emergence of rap was important too.

rap in the 80s was like the greatest thing. NWA and public enemy were fucking genius.
not discounting grandmaster flash.

the fashions of the era certainly left something to be desired, though.

the eighties were terrible for "mainstream" but some of the greatest stuff around came outta them. same with the 70's, except i guess the 70's was more publicized alright music... i was around then, though.
**I am listening to By Divine Right's Sweet Confusion.. it's "just.. ok"

I'd mention Eric B and Rakim and Boogie Down Productions as two other leading lights of the era. Quote:
I have to disagree about the mainstream thing. Think of people like Tears for Fears and Heaven 17 - they may not be to everyone's taste, but they (especially TFF) managed to combine being genuinely mainstream with writing songs about a variety of things ie not just about boy/girl stuff. That hasn't happened since. Heaven 17 were very political (lefties - not my politics, but hey ho). And, now, you see, I have to say this: Duran Duran, during their 2nd and 3rd LP's, whether you like them or not, filled a very important role insomuch as they were the first pop band to genuinely come close to matching the Beatles for popularity. That gave pop music a kind of legitimacy. Aside from pop, there was also the after-effects of punk. Also, we saw for the first time the breakdown of clear stylistic delineations as bands started to mix rap and rock, dance and rock, pop and punk and just about everything else. That said, there was some right shite too of course, I won't try to deny it.

Glad you agree. EB&R's 'Eric B Is President' and BDP's 'My Philosophy' are two of the decade's great songs, I think.

I tend to find most mainstream of the 80s too slick and overproduced, and that horrible drum sound... But I won't disagree with you Hip, cause you seem to have alot more knowledge on the subject than me.
