I really don't have enough feeling toward the place to post that much of an essay about it.
it is a little boring and less fun lately. |

Sonic Youth Gossip is the end times. It always has been. SYG is, in itself, the internet. The beginning and the end. A gathering of divine shamans babbling incoherently in tasteless words, interrupted occasionally by a small child with small ideas.
Seriously, though. This is the internet. Most of us are really really awesome(at least me and ema are). Certainly there are a few sour grapes among us, but who cares? Fuck them. Who cares what the state of SYG is? Sonic Youth Gossip is a place I go when I feel like being counterproductive. I'm much more concerned with the state my reality is in. Anyways, I just smoked too much weed. Love you guys.

When I made this thread, I was expecting a more strategic use than as a mere complaint receptacle.
Yet a complaint receptacle is useful, though. |

For the record, I know that wasn't directed at me and I wasn't complaining. I do far too much complaining in real life to need to do that here.
I mean end times in the best possible way.

I can't honestly say that this site is counterproductive for me as there's little productivity for it to be counter to. And, no, it isn't because of any lack of imagination or willpower. This state of acedia was originally induced by a number of personal and impersonal factors. In any case, I'm within its last days as I'll be leaving to Korea by the end of the month but, as you might expect, even a week can feel like an eternity. This past year has been a millennium unto itself.

korea! going to teach engrish? korea fucking rules-- i wanna go some day. as it is, i'm stuck here.
anyway, a good book for those unable to do anything while waiting is saul bellow's "dangling man" (it's a novel, in spite of the title)-- fun shit! i mean, depressing. but fun! eh, check it out yourself & tell me what you think. i believe it vaguely fits your predicament. but of course counterproductive-- you could be learning korean, right now! |

do some spiritual cleansing first.
korea is a very unstable environment, have you thought about the implications of moving there? you might precipitate the last drop that will cause spiritual disruption, the bad omen that will up-bring chaos and destruction. the syg'ers are here to testify, if something happens in korea in july, YOU are to blame and vengeance shall be brought upon thee. |

I like what ni'k had to say in those last two posts. A couple of things:
I don't think irony is necessarily bad; it can be used to make sincere observations and points. However, imo, most irony is used as a sort of a defense against the potential for believing sincerely in something and having it proven to be wrong foolish, in some sense. David Foster Wallace was greatly concerned with irony, and it's dangers. Which leads to another point, which is the use of references in lieu of actually discussion. My theory on our use of references, and the amount of time people spend discussing what they consume (be it art, or whatever), is that we have this need to connect with people, but that connecting through actual discussion is hard (some things are just hard to talk about) and again it leaves you exposed to looking silly. But we still have the need to connect. So we end up saying "I like this" which translates to "this articulates some feeling or belief that I have" and we're implicitly asking "do you like this?" which translates to "do you share this feeling or belief", and if so, there's some connection without all the messiness of trying to articulate something difficult. |

I read both your posts. everything you say has validity, but it must be taken into account that this is a conglomerate of people, ages 12 to 50+, so their intents and motivations are not so easily lumped together. A place, whether online or in the world outside, is the lump sum of it's participants, and the sad truth is that the loudest, most annoying participants are gonna get the bulk of the attention. As far as the discourse here, it can easily slip into inanities and infantile name calling but just as easily it slips into deep personal discussions. that is what I see as the beauty of this place. the thread "what are you listening to?" is one of my favorites and it has barely any text, just images of album covers that a person here is currently enjoying. That thread alone makes me glad to still listen to music as passionately as I do, becaue others do too. Compared to the world I have to live in every day, this SYG world is more willing to listen, more willing to discuss, more interesting, more widely opinionated than the nearly sterile world I work in, or the world of mass media. I love this place. It's faults are far outweighed by it's benefits. I love that I can log in at work and the first thing I read is this well-thought out polemic by you man. It gives me something to think about first thing in the morning, allowing my mind to enjoy itself (I enjoy thinking) while I do my menial laboring at the office. Thanks for that. SONIC LIFE!
