oh, so it is out like now. I see. not that I am excited, it is just normally there is some fuss around it, or maybe it is because I am not listening to commercial radio anymore and thankfully I am able to avoid the com. radio in work too these days. |

I’m the same way. I listen to what I listen to. I visit music news sites and check stuff out when it gets a rec but my eyes just go right past headlines like “U2 to release new album.” They were on be cover of Rolling Stone this month, and Bono was in the news for calling music “girlie” though, so that brought it into focus a bit. I’m comfortable with the fact that I enjoy a handful of U2 songs from the Unforgettable Fire days, and have a trivial pop appreciation for some of their ‘90s singles, but aside from that I think they’re actually an extremely unimportant band. The Police had a bigger influence on pop music, and still do. So did the Cure, Clash, DM, REM. U2 is only one of the biggest bands in the world because people’s options in the rock realm are so limited. |

Some good stuff on that list (Blanck Mass, DJ Sports, Arca, Visible Cloaks, Not Waving, Zola Jesus) but what a dick ass move not to include Kendrick Lamar. The burdens of having the #1 album in Rolling Stone, Spin, Time, Pitchfork, etc., etc. is that some fuckers just want to be contrarians. Any 2017 list that doesn’t include DAMN. is a joke. |

Some of us just honestly aren't interested in certain areas of music. That's not a problem. It just comes up the differences and taste, and taking differences in taste personally is a game for 12 year olds. I don't have time in my life for that music and that's perfectly okay. It doesn't make me any less developed of an aesthete.

Who’s talking about you? Who’s taking anything personally? Just sucks for mags that deliberately don’t include an album just to look edgy when it’s obviously something special. And honestly, excluding entire genres because you “don’t have time” kinda does make you a less developed aesthete. Your aesthetic will be less developed if you exclude entire genres of music than it would be if you didn’t. At the very least you’re limiting yourself if you refuse to listen to music based on some stubborn decision that it’s not “for you” or whatever. I didn’t realize you did this — and maybe you don’t — so I’m not bashing you. But if you look at genres and just say “naaah,” that’s not exactly going to help you *develop* your aesthetic... erm... prowess? (Shrug) |

Wow, really? That’s the first Kendrick song you’ve ever heard? The one for the superhero movie? The first one that I’ve ever seen get a negative review? Laaaaame. You know... it’s not actually cool to not know about stuff. This is something it took me a long time to learn. You perceive something to be unworthy, cuz yr punk or whatever (not YOU you, but “you” in general... “one”) and then things change and suddenly you live in an era where one of the most subversive artists in music is not on your radar because you don’t do stuff that isn’t pure feedback or harsh noise or known by nobody, etc. Times have a’changed, and you’re missing out. Listen to this and at least give him a fair shake: Kendrick Lamar - “The Blacker the Berry” What you did is like judging the Beatles based on “Yellow Submarine.” (Dumb.) |

For the record:
I just listened to 10 seconds of Kendrick Lamar (the song called DNA) and I never want to hear anything of it again. Not my kind of music at all. I don't like 99% of rap / hiphop/whateveryoucallit music. I get nausea when I listen to him rapping and the bass pumping. And I especially don't like the message they are peaching in most of the rap music. I do wonder why nobody (?) mentioned the Prophets Of Rage in this thread or anywhere else on this forum. Fuck, now that's a cool album!

Hah. But you always stop by to tell me why what I like isn’t real music. Anyway, whatever. Least we have Ambarchi in common. I forget what you even said to prompt what I said to prompt this reply, so fuck it. I just think you’re a dick and I will happily fuck with you any chance I get. Which I think is how you see me, so there’s a bizarre calculus to all of this. Of course everyone’s free to like whatever, and I wouldn’t honestly expect Kendrick to be on literally every list. |

I'm not trying to fuck with you, I just see you shit out a lot of thoughtless fallacies which I understand is going to be the case, it's the internet, but when you're decrying a culture towards which people gravitate as a direct result of feeling disenfranchised by other stuff, then have the audacity to moan about their lack of association with what amounts to little more than a zeitgeist, I'm going to take offence because it's total stupidity.
you're constantly going on about how taste is subjective as a means with which to justify your listening to stuff that ideologically runs completely counter to other stuff, then complain when people don't like something and critique them for the exact thing you're standing up for?

Sure, fair enough! I’m sure I do all these things. And yet, it’s ok for me to think it’s silly for anyone to claim DAMN. wasn’t one of the best albums of the year. It’s ok. It really is. |

Oh, come on. You can’t be that utterly devoid of a sense of humor. I’m not contradicting my comment that I think (*think.* see? Still all subjective here) any list that doesn’t at least mention Kendrick is a joke by saying that I don’t expect literally ever lost to mention him. Some lists are just wrong. Oh, I should say “in my opinion” so you don’t accidentally think I’m writing new rules for existence here. Lighten thee up. |
