Godspeed You! Black Emperor - 1997-10-05, Symptom Hall, Ontario, Canada
Early GY!BE gig, four months after F♯ A♯ ∞ came out on vinyl. I love the Internet Archive

And because it's a great companion piece to the final Miranda Sex Garden Outing in terms of sound and atmosphere:
Didn't intend to listen to this today, but I just now realized the two of them go together quite nicely. Plus, it's a fucking awesome album, so why not? |

Because it turned 30 two days ago. And because it's a magnificent piece of well-produced Pop music.

True. It's an amazing album, incredibly inspired and cohesive. Love it to bits. And while the general consensus seems to be leaning towards universal acclaim, I feel like it's sometimes dismissed by people who are into 80s Post-Punk for being part of their more Pop-oriented years. But that's exactly why I like it. Love their early stuff as well, talking the Faith, Seventeen Seconds and Pornography era, but for different reasons. Because damnit, they could write Pop. Disintegration is Pop with all its strengths (memorable hooks, lovely arrangements, etc.) and pretty much none of its weaknesses. This isn't just Pop, it's fucking great Pop. Legendary Pop even. Early Cure and their approach Mid-80s and onward were two different things altogether and they both got a lot going for them for different reasons. And damn, that slowly diminishing arrangement of "Untitled" just makes for one of the most perfect closers I've ever heard. So if I call it a magnificent piece of well-produced Pop, I mean this in the most enthusiastic way possible. |
