i don't get cable so i have to wait for netfux.
ANYWAY been watching some OLD episodes of julia child's "the french chef" i knew it would be funny but i didn't know it would be this hilarious. i cant' stop laughing. which makes the lessons very entertaining. i mean, much respect for what she did, but she's very funny too and almost never on purpose-- like, really spastic, and she splatters shit all over, and throws things around like the swedish chef in the muppets. and her voice! i think she had a naturally very deep voice so she compensated by forcing this very high pitch like bianca castafiore. so she breathes really hard,, and the inhale sounds sometimes like asthma (e.g., spinach episode, was like emphisema or something). sometimes she snorts-- LOUD. so it's really hilarious. but that's okay-- she showed you don't have to be a fucking plastic mannequin to be on tv and she schooled america and she had heart and enthusiasm and she did it all with great gusto-- substance over style. oh and the production values of cooking shows at the time were utter shit. there are practically no cuts-- maybe just one when she goes to the "dining room." or maybe the camera from above. but some shows it's jsut one very long fucking take. like there's this episode on potatoes the show is over she walks off camera then she squints at teh bright lights and makes a frown before she's completely off the frame. can't explain, it's like a very subtle silent film comedy-- the frantic motions, etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vyP_U64Pi4 <-potatoes, watch the very end (though it probably only makes sense after the whole show) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw0Ij1Fxgq4 <-after an erudite lecture on knives, she tells you to make the soup from a can http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRZxaUuFA1Y <- roast chickens, watch the beginning http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_vZXmlxnKM <- spinach asthma attack! the un-giada. 100% unpolished. she's my hero. |

I am still in a post-Breaking Bad state where I don't have a TV show on the go. If you were to watch one (and only one) show right now, what would it be?

girls season 2
disc 1 seems to be going nowhere plotwise. some characters seem to be forgotten. lena dunham is a good writer, and i love her for that, but i don't wanna see her naked all the time. |

the walking dead is back, so I have inevitably sunk into the depths of misery. why the fuck do I torture myself with this trash? I really cannot fathom how it has got this successful, and yet I can't bring myself to turn this shit off. it's as if the writers are pubescent boys playing out their masturbatory fantasies on-screen, manifested through the single worst group of actors I have seen anywhere. every single time rick says "corrrrlllll" my will to live dissipates. fucccckkkkkkkk I hate carl, I really want to see that little cunt getting fucking molested by that giant walking horde of zombies. it's just so damn clumsy -- there is no reason to offer a previously-alluded to backstory for nushawn when her character is established, you goddamn idiots. they just don't seem to know what they have; this show is eternally on the precipice of greatness, maybe if it was handled and created by an entirely different group of people, and it's this promise of something even vaguely resembling quality that keeps me watching. and the fucked up walkers. and nushawn and her sword. and rick's eyes. and the possibility of carl dying. and the dead baby. hopefully it improves, after that entire torpid routine at the prison and the 'war' with the unwittingly comical fucktard guvnor. always a chance that more will die when they're out of the prison...
----- ------- -------- girls season 3 has lost me, I'm all for cunt-y characters but marnie is pathetic and annoying (still hot), and without extensive jessa there's no tonic for hannah's constant whining. then with shoshanna devolving into fucking ralph wiggum, this is the equivalent of sensory rape. don't even remember what I enjoyed in it now...except that bit with caroline was dangun hilarious.. ----- ------- -------- back on with new archer, wrapped my head around the concept (it was soooooo tuff) and now am loving it again. the quickest, smartest show I've seen since 30 rock but without the emotional bullshit and heartstring-pulling that came to dog that show. ----- ------- -------- as ever, svu proves my rock. |

lol i 'd say i feel you in large %, but also that i somehow started to like it or got used to it or smth. at least Rick is hot. and they do deal with evil and good, which is smth i always welcome in series. true detective is good. american horror story 2 was the best of all. and i started bron/broen 2 last night. still trying to watch more films than series though. |

watching "band of brothers"
it's pretty fucking good. horrible too--war is hell. but watching war on tv played by actors not so much. the interviews with the old dudes will fuck you up. they break down in tears. |

I actually hadn't heard of True Detective til now. Looks amazing. Woody Harrelson is also a top notch actor, like Matthew Mc.
I used to actively dislike Matthew McC, but in the past two years or so, he's been great in Bernie, Killer Joe, Magic Mike and even has a great 5 minutes in Wolf of Wall Street. And I'm skipping some stuff. He is so good in Dallas Buyer's Club I'm pretty sure he'll win (unless they give it to Bruce Dern for old time's sake). So restrained. He just is the character. I contrast this with Christian Bale who seems to be continuously thinking, "C'mon, gimme the Oscar. Look how good I'm acting. I'm really getting into this. C'mon. Gimme." Dude, stop acting. You'll be a much better actor. |

Watched four episodes of TRUE DETECTIVE yesterday/today.
Aside from the riveting storyline and characters, near the end of episode four there is a long take that lasts several minutes, involves lots of people, some special effects and a variety of lighting situations. Just from a technical standpoint, it's one of the most accomplished shots I've seen in awhile, TV or film. Here it is for anyone interested. (No huge plot spoilers, but still, caveat viewer.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_HuFuKiq8U |
