im rarely into "words" music (hence im not an opera fan). this one doesn't do it for me but then again same thing with la bohème, so i don't blame anyone. anyway the painter was a refugee of the spanish civil war who had a shitty life but became a surrealist painter in mexico. this is a kind of opera about her? at least that seems to be the theme of the thing, making it eventually after great hardship. mexico took in a lot of spanish civil war refugees. it was a big deal, historically. |

Yves Tumor - Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume I really liked YT's new album first, but now after several listens, I downright LOVE it. It treads a perfect line between sleek, poppy production and experimental, genre-bending touches. "God Is A Circle" is a pounding, dark toetapper, "Lovely Sewer" a heartfelt lo-fi tinged 80s Synthpop homage, "Heaven Surrounds Us Like A Hood" has such an impressive and diverse structure (and an absolutely ethereal guitar break), "Operator" sounds like Prince if he had a thing for pronounced Post-Punk bass riffs and "Echolalia" has a circular, bouncy quality to it that is just a lot of fun to listen to. And those are just a few of the standouts. This piece sounds both very modern, but also has a lot of reverence for its many influences. It's a wonderful collage. |

Scam Likely - Self-Titled I've grown somewhat jaded towards a lot of Minimal Synth, Synth Punk and general Synth-heavy revival bands. There's just a lot out there that just sounds dull and lifeless to me. This is not the case with Scam Likely. Though it wouldn't be entirely accurate to just assign those labels to them - they have quite a few guitar and bass-driven tracks as well. Overall, a lovely, wavy affair. One of this year's gems. And "Time FreaK" fills me with such sweet melancholy that it's hard to describe. Name Your Price-basis, folks! |

I believe they are two different bands. The one from Milwaukee seems to be a classic four-piece. This one here seems to be a duo from - I believe L.A. - the label that released this at least is from L.A. and a band from the area I watch on insta watches one of the band members, Vinny Earley, too. It's a bit confusing, I'll admit. Even rateyourmusic seems to lump them both together. But I can see why that happens - too little has been communicated about the two-piece project and the other one seems to be quite popular in certain regions. Anyway, I think I'll give the Milwaukee one a listen too. My interest is piqued now. Edit: Just listened to "Jesus Christ". Very nice indeed. It caters to those listening sensibilities of mine that really have a soft spot for the likes of Sleater Kinney or Grass Widow. Further exploration imminent |

Ampgrave by Lullabye Arkestra I pre-ordered the new Matana Roberts album, and to save on shipping got me about half a dozen of other albums from the Constellation Records store on CD. This is one of them. Had never heard of them before, but it's really fun even though it does get a bit boring towards the end. Too much the same, too much creaming & shouting perhaps. It's a weird mix of Silver Mt. Zion (with horns instead of violins), rrrriotggiiirrrrlll punk, Scout Nibblet and I don't know White Stripes or any other drums and bass combo. https://carlabozulich.bandcamp.com/ holy cow this is good stuff!!!! Never heard these albums completely yet. These are the ones that Carla recorded in Montreal with the Silver Mt Zion band and many other guests. Bought them out of curiosity actually, but now listened to them all (on headphones). Oh my, so good! There's a few more albums she recorded for Constellation, will get them next time....

and also, over the weekend:
listened to these two so much over the last weeks through bandcamp that I wasn't allowed to stream them for free anymore. So now I own them! I'm doomed They will return to Europe in August, so I might see them again...

Bachelors Of Art - Descend Again Awesome, slightly Siouxsie-esque late 80s Goth from Columbia, SC. One of the many overlooked gems from that era. |

although they moved to north carolina lol WHY. but anyway i don't know now, it's like the music is taking a backseat to her singing, and jenn has a beautiful voice, but "in the old times" their music was more interesting to me than now but fortunately! the music lives on. but unfortunately andy sings. see, if jenn could sing here, that would be their ideal newish record for me haha his music, her voice. cmoooon! do itttttttt!!! |

Yesterday whilst sitting cats:
One of the cats seemed to really be into The Breeders. Once it was on, he got close to the speakers and broke out his favorite catnip toy, absolutely going to town on it. He knows what's up |
