beyond by dinosaur jr, and most of the other dinosaur jr albums post-bug. the low quality production on the first three albums made the music sound so much more intense, and j mascis' solos were cooler when he was shitter at playing the guitar.
also, i also dont particularly like the production on sister, it sounds a bit... hollow? it needs more edge in my opinion. still a great album though. |

^^ I agree for most of the songs, but schizophrenia's mixing was perfect in my opinion. Its actually my fav sonic youth song/mix. its really warm compared to the rest of the album...if that makes sense

Yes, I have Anth 3, too, and I hate that version. I much prefer the "sugary and cheesy" version on the original album.

I knew the thread would get a bit controversial
A an over-the-top or dated production to someone's taste can be a perfect one to someone else's.

The first thing I said when I put on Let it Be Naked. "Oh, so this album doesn't suck." Yeah, those Spector stings make me queasy.
That vacum-tube sound on Sister is to die for. Why anyone can't like it is beyond me. On the other hand, how come no one's mentioned Daydream Nation? Everything sounds so...polished, even the freak-out middle in Silver Rocket. There's no edge. Dylan's Infidels could've been one of his classics, if it weren't for that clean, syrupy sound. Should've cut it live in a day or two. |

Yeah, the conventional wisdom, like I said, is that Spector ruined the Let It Be album, but I think otherwise. I think the production is perfect for that album.

The production of DSOTM is part of its beauty. I think about this every once in awhile and I'm conflicted. Trompe Le Monde and Doolittle are two very good Pixies albums, with better written songs than Surfer Rosa. But Surfer Rosa is the better sounding album, and happens to be less produced. Trompe and Doolittle IMO would be even better to me if they had the minimalist production of Surfer Rosa. But I think that they'd be much meaner and darker sounding albums, and maybe the Pixies weren't really going for that. |

Any Electric Prunes album, really. They sound best (incredible, really) as a garage band, as their 1968 live Stockholm radio album clearly shows. Why anyone would put a string section in that music is beyond me.

Agree for Dino, but not for Sister, the sound is just magical ( Catholic Block,Tuff Gnarl, Pacific Coast Highway,...) Another album : Terror Twilight by Pavement. It's a waste. The guitars are too clean. |

Anyway, what can ya do? Even if you don't like the production, there's still something to like, right, with most of these things?

I agree about doolittle tho I dont think its quite as bad as tromp. I dont even like tromp that much. come on pilgrim and surfer rosa are perfect.
I think the thing about let it be and spector that works is that they were trying to write more classic pop masterpieces, but more mature then some of the earlier work, and less experimental than the stuff on pepper. so in that regard I think spectors wall of sound was perfect for THOSE songs. and george harrisons first album would have been horrible if it werent for the reverb caked wall of sound...in my opinion. Paul wanted let it be naked and those songs to be more raw like the live band, but the composition of those songs didnt call for it in my opinion and they should have left the rock n roll sound for the early rock n roll material. (maybe that made sense...) EDIT: back to sister, I agree about a few posts up, that is such a magical album. I remember the first time I heard the breakdowns and bends near the end of schizophrenia I felt like I was tripping...then the first time i did acid and listened to that song I thought I was in heaven... |

I was just gonna say about Dinosaur after Bug, but it dawned on me that its not the production so much that gets me as the fucking guitar solo's. Leave it!
And Surfa Rosa is magnificant because of (the songs and) Steve Albini's genius |

Yes, after that, I agree. But up and including DSOTM, the albums are still listenable.
