I usually go to Starbucks because I'm a convenience whore. Double espresso plz. When I have to drink regular coffee, I like it very strong and black.

generally speaking, at chain stores etc there yirgacheffe and sidamo are the same coffee. They are both regional names of places in Ethiopia where good coffee comes from, in fact coffee is indigenous to this Kaffa region of southern ethiopia, but its like saying San Gabriel Valley in the Los Angeles area (ie, Yirgacheffe is a small region of what was previously called the province of Sidamo) the fluctuation is just the natural affects of differences in individual coffee plants getting blended together in your cup

i do believe that the name yirgacheffe is controlled by a single cooperative, so if i remember correctly then they must keep the quality high

yes this is true, but it is also a recent phenomenon. ALL coffee from the Yirgacheffe region is from Sidamo, because it is a county in the province of Sidamo. However, even traditionally there has been superior coffee grown out of yirgacheffe, but it is not called such by Ethiopians. As a brand name, Yirgacheffe as the more luxurious brew is recent, as are many of the co-ops. So essentially, it just depends on how you get yr ethiopian coffee and what Coffee Trade Union (the central distributer under govt license for each region co-ops) exports it. For example, Starbucks Sidamo is a blend of co-op commonly branded as Yirgacheffe. But as I said, that is brand to brand.. But it is true that yirgacheffe produces the world's best coffee. my parish priest and father-confessor was born in yirgacheffe, it is also one of the world's most beautiful places..
