Loop-wise, the only track I would think of as being at all stoner-ish is "Burning World", and even that seems more smacked-out than stoned.

Acid Mothers Temple's 'In C' is ok, it has its moments, but it's not all that.

Ok, nobody has mentioned Hawkwind yet, another band that is not stoner rock as such, but it surely pushes its way into this thread, at least for being a favourite with many a stoner rocker. They might not always have the compact rock sound that guitars have on stoner rock records, but their mention makes sense in this thread.

I was thinking about them when Loop were brought up. Maybe it's because they're now so associated with that awful crusty rave/rock festival thing from the early 90s, whatever it is, too many people forget what a terrific band they once were - and how many (usually not so terrific) bands they influenced. What's interesting about them is that, as dated as they may now sound, they were genuinely looking towards the future, whereas so much of the Stoner rubbish of today has set it's controls firmly to the heart of the past. Talk about missing the point. |

Lets not forget Fu Manchu. Especially the early stuff with Nebula's Romano and Glass.

Someone played me some Fu Manchu a little while ago. Didn't see it at all. The same with Clutch, who I just think are bloody awful.

Space Ritual is one of my all time favorite albums actually, though as you say, it 'aint stoner rock. Certainly an influence on them, especially Lemmy's bass lines (essentially the same he used in Motorhead just massively slower). But where stoner rock would have metal riffs, Hawkwind have moog and pedal distorted wind instruments. The weirdest thing about them is how influential they are to early punk bands, not only the Pistols which Lydon always openly admitted, but lots of west coast U.S. bands too. |

agreed, FU manchu were great early on. they werent very good for long after glass and romano left and formed the BETTER band of the 2, Nebula....nebula besides the stoner rock label also have a tinge of psychdelia to them...u can hear it in glass' guitar playin on early fu manchu albums..and once he left..fu manchu became straight ahead stoner rock for the msot part

I'm with you on Nebula. I saw them live once in this shitty frat bar in Rhode Island opening for Mudhoney and they were so incredibly boring. I didn't know they were supposed to be Stoner Rock, as they weren't really about minimalism built on sharp repetative riffs so much as grunge guitar solo overkill. Like Blue Cheer without the charisma that somehow kept Blue Cheer from sucking. |

Awesome band, seen them a couple of times, got a few of their records, but I'd call them psychedelic more than anything else, especially the more recent stuff... I don't like the term stoner rock. Don't know why. It just sounds so stupid. |

you know, this is EXACTLY THE ALBUM that came to my mind when I saw this thread, and I was looking for an online version of it to elaborate my point. unnecessarily heavy, without having the excess of headbanger or metal.. its like metal slowwwed down with a different edge.. http://www.myspace.com/earthofficial (I know in advance, this guy is a douche : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YS8SbCeTW8)
