Am I the only one who thinks that Youth of America is the weakest album from their "trilogy" ? Of course it is a very important record and all but I enjoy Over the Edge way much more, it has a lot of badass songs and Is This Real? is just so good, it has my favorite Wipers track: "Mystery".

worth noting also that the box set of 45s "eight songs for greg sage and the wipers" is incredibly good and comes on a bunch of pretty colored vinyl.

I've never heard of them as being 'boring'...highly subjective of course...but they exude quite a bit of energy to me...

What a great band!
Really catchy on first listen and yet I never tire of it, even after listening to it a lot for several years. Boring?? How anyone can think that is beyond me. Have to agree with whoever mentioned Straight Ahead, found it record hunting once and ended up loving it. Not as upbeat though. |

I only have the box set, which is great, but I'm curious what the Wipers experts would recommend for later albums...seems like nobody talks about them past the first three.

The Wipers were one of those bands that were immediately engaging and likable to me. I find that with some bands people seem to love, it takes me a few listens for their music to kinda 'click' with me, where I'm like, "Oh! Now I get why people love this band." Not the Wipers, though. As soon as I put on Over the Edge, I was hooked. Greg Sage is such a fucking awesome songwriter. D-7, Doom Town, Youth of America, Potential Suicide, Return of the Rat, etc... sooooo many good songs from this band.
