I've been on a Lowathon for the past 18 hours!!!
Maybe you long-time fans can rank the 12 albums, and I will start proper listening (vice whatever song pops up on youtube) with the worst one. Thanks in advance.

Well, there was an album eons ago that didn't do much for me, so I listened to Other Stuff instead.
Maybe it's time to revisit? So much music, so little time.

Anyway, today I found CDs of Things We Lost In The Fire and C'mon.
I am beside myself.

it's Christmas, so listen to the Christmas album. Or one of their Christmas themed live sets such as one of these. My recommendation would be the one in 2008, but that's only because I was there. Shots And Ladders was so amazing, it's one of my least favourite songs on the albums, it's too depressing for me so I would usually skip it whenever I listen to the Trust album. But to hear them play it live it's one of my favourites.
And while you're there, check out both Organ Reframed sets

Fuck, I'm in love with Double Negative. This album fucking OWNS me.
It really is a left turn for them though, isn't it? A Kid A type move. I'm devouring some of their earlier albums, and while I think they are all good to great, they all seem....well......nice. Pleasant. Something my mother would enjoy. I honestly don't mean that in a demeaning way. But here we are, 25 years in, and they basically say "fuck that shit" and produce what I feel is a masterpiece that my mother would hate. They seem to have written some of their best songs, in the singer-songwriter vein, and then fucked them up gloriously. This producer deserves our love. And it must be said.....Trump is good for something!!!

There's a very nice podcast conversation between Alan and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie. Al talks about the new album at the 27 minute mark, actual podcast starts at the 9th minute

Thanks for turning me on to this podcast.
Unbeknownst to me, the latest episode of The Antidote doesn’t feature Double Negative......but the end of the podcast, the host tell about Alan falling while snow skiing and puncturing a lung during the recording of, Double Negative. Unrelated......happy to see Skuj posting about music!!! Quote:

Godammit I really love Things We Lost In The Fire and C'mon. At first I saw them as merely pleasant singer-songwriter fare, but when the singing and songwriting is this good, you have to sit the fuck down and listen. C'mon has 2 songs that I particularly love - Majesty/Magic and Nothing But Heart. Both build carefully, cautiously, ...to epic conclusions. Low actually reminds me of Radiohead a lot. Both bands seem to make beautiful songs out of very simple/sparse ideas.
I can't wait to dig deep into the other 10 albums.

Ranking Low albums? That’s hard. Yikes. I’m big on their late-2000s/early-2010s material. “C’mon,” “Drums & Guns,” “The Great Destroyer.” All really excellent records, and probably where I’d recommend starting. “Long Division” is essential, and it sounds like you already fuck with “Things We Lost in the Fire.” “Christmas” is goddamn brilliant too, if not festive. “Little Drummer Boy” is full of fuzzy, noisey awesomeness. I think “Double Negative” is at least in contention for one of their best albums. They’ve switched up genre before, but never so drastically. Don’t start with the “worst” ... just check these albums stat. To be honest I can’t really handle a lot of their music anymore. The sadness can be all-consuming on some albums, and I’m just not as down for that as I used to be. |

Being a fan of Low long as I have, can’t say I recall ever having the need to rank the albums in order. I agree with Severian, Long Division is essential......along with: Trust, TWLITF, and Double Negative.
Being older and set in my ways, I understand spending the day binging on a band like, Low......but not to produce a ranking. I was fortunate to purchase Low albums as they were released, devouring them over a period of time that led up to seeing the songs performed in concert.....,lucky, lucky me : ) Well......this wasn’t the case with TWLITF. Low played Austin on a Friday night before the album dropped the following Tuesday......but they had copies at the merch table and Alan handed it to me as I handed him cash. I also got to visit with Alan the morning after when I ran in to him surfing the racks at Waterloo records. Seeing Low perform songs live can greatly skew any ranking system you devise! Would someone suggest to Skuj that going back and reading the previous two album threads may help him in his quest of all things LOW. Ones and Sixes The Invisible Way Quote:

Yeah, it’s never really occurred to me to rank their records, which is weird because I rank everything!!! But I dig what you’re getting at. Skuj: I’ve been a fan for a very long time, but not as long as this guy. Do check out the other Low threads, because there’s a lot of discussion about them here, and their fans are devoted. Probably the second most popular band on the board after Sonic Youth if I had to guess. |

I saw those threads just sitting there for years on end it seems, without ever delving into them. (I may have posted one or two questions?) Yes, I shall look at those threads now that I See The Light.

I have shared a studio with a former member of this band for nearly 15 years. Cool to see them make a go of it for so long and carve out their own niche. I'm not as interested in that sound anymore but I still love the first three albums and I still go see them from time to time. Cool to see them branch out in some of the newer albums like this one and Drums And Guns. They're great live and I feel lucky to have been able to see them develop from the very beginning.

I don't get what the fuss is about with this record. It's like Massive Attack with 4K videos.
