It may not be an original opinion, but to me Sgt. Pepper's is the most overrated record in rock history. A day in the life is the only song I really like on it.

love the guernica avatar massassinated.
I would rather listen to sgt peppers than 99% of the music that was put out in 1967. It contains a synthesis of everything that the 4 Beatles loved about music. from allmusicguide After Sgt. Pepper, there were no rules to follow — rock and pop bands could try anything, for better or worse. I place it along such crazed mishmash albums as Cornelius' FANTASMA, or Mr Bungle's self titled debut. It was and is an amalgasm of everything in it's creator's heads at the time. everything.

It's a culmination of all that they'd done up to that point. A kind of logical conclusion.
I prefer it to the later albums because they seem a bit more scattershot, a bit less focused. As though they knew they'd already made their grand artistic statement with Pepper. It's like the post-Pepper albums are really the products of a band trying to deal with that album's impact, both on music, and themselves as a band. The three albums: Rubber Soul, Revolver and Pepper, combine to have become (IMHO) one of the greatest album sequences in the history of popular music - along with Scott Walker 1-4, and a few others. Their greatness - and thus their place in history - is mapped out on those three albums. |

And unfortunately, overrated is the most overused word in rock history.
