Definitely the Heart and Soul box set. Hearing the Peel Session version of "Exercise One" is still a joy to behold.

had to vote substance, since its the only one i own and got after it was out. and has songs that i love (warsaw for example). in addition am listening today closer and unknown pleasures and still feel that i like substance more. pleasures felt darker than closer and like the sound more in this record. would like to find warsaw records from back then. love this rare feeling when sounds of bands from my youth dont feel outdated or boring.

Here's some Warsaw demos:

At A Later Date

Here's a gem. Super rare Joy Division, never recorded in studio, not on the "Heart & Soul" box set, and one of their more rockin songs. I met a guy a few months ago who told me he hated Joy Division. I tried to politely explain that perhaps a bit of true angst was necessary in your soul to truly appreciate it. What I should have said was this: "You're fuckin stupid."

I love all of their albums, but the last three tracks on Closer seal the deal for me.

Substance, for it offers a good overall trip through the band's career, from the Sabbathy riffs of their early days as Warsaw, to the artsy pomp of their latter days as a proto-electronic outfit. I have the vinyl edition. The CD doesn't sound as good, but it has six or seven bonus tracks, I believe.

Closer and Unknown Pleasures are perfect. I cant pick between those two. I mean its one of my all time favorite bands for fucks sake. I was goin to see the movie this weekend but fell asleep before my girlfriend picked me up; result: my gf pissed at me, and even worse, didnt see the movie.

"This is the way, Step Inside"

gotta be one of the most intense and emotional lines in the history of rock and roll.

I have been listening to tons of Joy Division, of late. I feel like I should apologise for making a really silly remark about them being inferior to New Order on this forum a while ago, a remark that was brought up by not having listened to them in years. Joy Division are one of those bands that are important to me on a personal level. My best friend back home used to play me his records all the time and even named his record shop Closer, with the biggest poster of Ian Curtis that I have ever seen on its main wall. Unknown Pleasures has always been my favourite of theirs, because it's sonically perfect, literally one of those records that manages to sound masterful and magnificient in all its simplicity. Day Of The Lords, Disorder, Shadowplay, New Dawn Fades are all incredible songs.

Am I the only one who thinks Closer is uneven ? The last four tracks are so great the other ones pale a bit in comparison.

I didn't get Unknown pleasures at first, now I can see why more people chose it as their fave, it's more consistent in my opinion.

I have that. I don't think it's a bootleg though, because it's available in every mainstream cd shop here and has been for years... it's one of those cds that seems to be always in the discount bins everywhere.

Anyway, I agree that Closer is a bit uneven, but the last three songs are brilliant. Doom and gloom have rarely been captured so beautiful and sad as in The Eternal and Decades, while Twenty Four Hours is maybe their best up-tempo song in my opinion, with some of Ian Curtis' most desolate vocals. Both Unknown Pleasures and Substance are probably better collections of songs though, with Substance having most of my favourites.
