You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to finding nobody again.
SpectralJulianIsNotDead's contrarian dismissal of Dylan (who is widely regarded as one of the best or the best lyricist in rock history, no less) isn't surprising considering he's a fucking ghostbuster haha. Hey Spectral, read this and perhaps gain an inkling of perspective, if you dare: http://www.historynet.com/culture/so...y/3035296.html It's about the impious and bored Fox sisters in the nineteeth century who are largely responsible for bringing ghost mumbo-jumbo to the new world; they both confessed later that it was all a prank that got out of hand. Meanwhile, nitwit Jenna Bush remarked recently that she believes there are ghosts in the White House. http://journals.democraticunderground.com/IanDB1/4502 |

Noel Gallagher deserved recognition. His music is fine, but his lyrics instill despair.

corgan, hetfield, dude from editors.
I always find it most offensive when lyrics are presented with gravitas and conviction as though they are enormously profound and insightful when really they are ugly lists of cliche which only successfully express the extraordinary level of delusion under which the writer labours... Corgan wins hands down (infact he should probably have had his voice box removed the very first time he announced that the chorus for bullet with butterfly wings was going to be "despite all my rage I'm still just a rat in a cage") but Hetfield and the arse in editors are all putting up decent stabs (hetfield has a particularly compelling narrative as he started out as an awful lyricist and is actually managing to get worse as time goes by). |

Some of the greatest lyricists of the 1960s and early '70s had their 'dumb fun' moments too. Check out Lennon & McCartney's 'Rocky Raccoon', Morrison's 'Do It', Reed's 'Ferryboat Bill' and 'Andy's Chest', Cohen's 'Queen Victoria' and 'Is That What You Wanted', etc.
A friend of mine once pointed out the dumbness of old Kiss lyrics--'She' in particular. I also seem to recall some lines from '80s black metallers Bathory that went something like "Every night at midnight twelve, I read Satanic Bilble/Take off my clothes/Get into bed/Masturbate myself to death." Sounds like the narrator's early socialisation may have been a little flawed. |

Fly into the rising sun,
Faces, smiling everyone Yeah, she is a whole new tradition I feel it in my heart My woman from Tokyo She makes me see My woman from Tokyo She's so good to me Talk about her like a Queen Dancing in a Eastern Dream Yeah, she makes me feel like a river That carries me away My woman from Tokyo She makes me see My woman from Tokyo She's so good to me But I'm at home and I just don't belong ... So far away from the garden we love She is what moves in the soul of a dove Soon I shall see just how black was my night When we're alone in Her City of light Rising from the neon gloom Shining like a crazy moon Yeah, she turns me on like a fire I get high My woman from Tokyo She makes me see My woman from Tokyo She's so good to me

President Eisenhower, WWII general and Republican, tried to warn everyone in his farewell address way back in 1961, so the situation seems fairly hopeless, groar.
It seems that even if Barack Hussein Obama (you'll be hearing more about that middle name soon) is for real, he'll never get elected. It's not even likely that John Edwards will get a nomination. No, most likely we'll get Giuliani, Thompson or Hillary Clinton as our next president. In short, business as usual. And don't forget the Carlyle Group and Raytheon and many others along with Haliburton. __________________ The Boston-based watchdog group United for a Fair Economy, known in general for its reports on the vast pay gap between CEOs and workers, published a report in 2003 on the even more insane gap between soldiers and weapons CEOs. Using federal, corporate, and think tank data, the group found that while the average army private in Iraq earns about $20,000 a year, the average CEO among the 37 largest publicly traded defense contractors made 577 times more money in 2002, $11.3 million. Since 2000, the 37 defense contractor CEOs (actually, given our first-strike war, it is more appropriate to refer to them as offense contractors) have taken home $1.35 billion. That may not be Bill Gates, but it still means that just 37 men have made enough money in the last three years to, for instance, pay for two years of running the Boston public schools. Meanwhile, everyone knows how the budget cuts have turned public school systems into their own little Baghdads because our governments say there is no more money after war, tax cuts, corporate giveaways, and sports stadiums. |

4 non blondes
25 years and my life is still trying to get up that great big hill of hope For a destination I realized quickly when I knew I should That the world was made up of this Brotherhood of man For whatever that means And so I cry somethimes when I'm lying in bed Just to get it all out what's in my head And I'm, I am feeling a little peculiar So I wake in the morning and I step outside And I take deep breath and I get real high And I scream from the top of my lungs What's goin' on And I say hey.... And I say hey what's goin' on And I say hey.... I said hey what's goin' on Oooh.... Oooh.... And I try, oh my God do I try I try all the time In this institution And I pray, oh my God do I pray I pray every single day For a revolution And so I cry sometimes when I'm lying in bed Just to get it all out what's in my head And I'm, I am feeling a little peculiar So I wake in the morning and I step outside And I take deep breath and I get real high And I scream from the top of my lungs What's goin'on And I say hey... And I say hey what's goin' on And I say hey... I said hey what's goin' on And I say hey... And I say hey what's goin' on And I say hey... I said hey what's goin' on Oooh.... 25 years and my life is still trying to get up that great big hill of hope For a destination

The Go-Betweens had the weirdest genius for blurring that fine line between awful and brilliant:
Exhibit A: She was in The Omen with Gregory Peck She got killed, what the heck From the song, 'Lee Remick' |

From "Foundations" by Kate Nash:
You said I must eat so many lemons, 'cause I am so bitter. I said "I'd rather be with your friends mate, cause they are much fitter"

I love Bowie, but some his early lyrics are really awkward in my opinion ("Song for Bob Dylan" being a good example for instance). |
