Heheh, I love sonic youth's early shit.. I think the last album I really enjoyed by them was ghosts and flowers, though murray street had its moments. Still, I've been posting here for 5-6 years.. I've met tons of cool people, and this board seems to have the highest concentration of non-morons I've ever seen on a music board (though there are still a few morons..). So, regardless, I pledge my allegiance to Sonic Youth fandom even when they're churning out records I don't really care for. The only reason I say "The Fall > Sonic Youth" is because the Fall have more great albums than SY... but of course, they have like 10 more than SY, too, so...

Well I've never stopped loving the Youth... and I like the Fall, but don't love them. So to me SY is better. But of course, either way you cut it, it's opinions, much like the ones that spew from MES' mouth. Ha.
It is a good forum, though (here I mean). I used to post on here all the time years and years ago, and then stopped from like 2004 thru 2005. Not sure why. |

Oh come on, Sonic Youth > The Fall > Art Brut. Even if I like Art Brut (they're lyrics are really funny) - I even own their first album -, you just cannot compare them to The Fall. I hope you were joking at least |

I'll gladly listen to a shity album (Rather Ripped) by a good band of enjoyable and wonderful peoaple (SY) than listen to a better album by a band led by a fucking shity, mean and annoying person (MES).

If you actually met half of the people in bands you like, you might find out that they, too, are assholes. Have you met Thurston? No? Have you met Mark E. Smith? No? Okay, then how can you say anything either way? How people portray themselves as an image in a band doesn't necessarily reflect on how they are in person.
I, too, used to say things like what you said.. if I don't like the person, it's hard for me to like their art... and, honestly, it IS hard to get into a band at times if I know they're a bunch of dicks.. but as I've matured, I also realize that there are tons of good racist bands, there are tons of good sexist bands, there are tons of good bands who don't have the same politics as me; you can disagree with the message all you want, but if the music is good -- well, it probably takes a mature person to go, "You know, I don't like you personally, but you are good at what you do." And it took me years to get to that point. Personally, I've never once had any thoughts of Mark E. Smith as an asshole, I just assume he's highly opionated (and considering how knowledgable he is, I dunno if I can blame him) and his opinions usually rub people the wrong way. And besides, he says things like "WE'RE THE FALL, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOU AND US IS YOU'RE IDIOTS!" to a bunch of fans; it's obviously not meant to be taken seriously. And even if it was, so what? It'd be harder to take some of his lyrics seriously if he was portrayed as this sweetheart. So, whether you like him or not, to say something like "I'd rather listen to a shit album [Rather Ripped] made by nice people"... well, fuck, I'm a REALLY nice guy, in real life I have no enemies at all, buy my album! If that's all it takes, sweet! |

I have never met MES or TM, but it is a long enough time since i've followed their bands, and for sure you can really know a person from the lyrics and interviews. You can NOT fake what you are for 25 years, everyday. If you can't figure an artist by its work, and if you can not identify with the work, this means you belong somewhere else (generally speaking).
As for the racist, homophobic bands i have to disagree too. It's like listening to Gangsta Rap when you have nothing in common with that ideology, lifestyle, etc. Just because you like the beats, or something like that... In my opinion this is why the current status of good music (i hate the term) is so low in mainstream. People are so easy to be entertained, and there is no interest in finding and discovering the artists. Like Jello Biafara said "Those dumb punk kids will buy anything" |

I don't need no confirmation from the artists as being nice guys. This will never make me buy a record or something like that. There are to many self-acclaimed sweet people in the music industry, and there are at least twice as many brain-dead fucks, who will buy and listen their records without giving a second thought or even without knowing why he bought or listened to that artist/record. (There are countless reasons for being a poser). I wish i knew English better... |
