seems like Dinosaur is the common answer... well yeah, left me ringing for three days. Made my classes hell to keep up with. Second time I saw them was much easier, can't tell if it was a quiter show or I just built tolerance or going deaf.

some power electronics in leeds that was si intense even the hardened veterans were covering their ears. imagine mic feedback at a piercing volume. also carlos giffoni, skullflower, merzbow, acid mothers temple, lightning bolt and wolf eyes have constituted to me saying what more often than i would like.

Swans at the Zap Club, on their Holy Money tour.
The Zap was tiny and Swans used the same PA as they were using for big venues like Kilburn National Ballroom.
The sound drove the air from my lungs.

i totally forgot skullflower! that one was a killer, also because it was in a very small room. and burial chamber trio, again in a small room. merzbow and giffoni were loud but not in an ear-hurting ways when i saw them.

No way, Scientists rocked! They weren't that loud, just when the singers mic fed back real bad. SY aren't that loud either. I was right in front of Lee too. Frenzal Rhomb are much louder.

I know The Scientists were really good, but I think it would have been better if they weren't so loud. I thought Sonic Youth would be louder, so it was a nice surprise that they were listenable.

What's the loudest show u been to?

It was the first show at the new Washington St. location where the club still resides after many, many moves over the span of the earlier years of its existence. I've posted accounts of this show nearly every time there has been a thread here about your favorite live shows and I've posted a friend's account also at least once too. Maybe I'll revisit the subject later on, but for now there's another show that I'd like to briefly write about, although there are definitely some other notable runners-up too.

I've written of this before as well, but I went to a show put on by this band called Gobblehoof in a very small below street level place called (at the time) The Downstairs on Clayton St. in Athens. And this show was actually even louder than the Dino/MBV one.

My girlfriend at the time and I were downtown earlier in the afternoon on the day of the show and she happened to know the guitar player from high school in DeKalb County and he told us they were playing. So we go to the show, and immediately get a little starstruck because Michael Stipe and his big ol' dome is there. This is the only show at that venue I ever went to at this place that had folded chairs set up and Michael was front row center of the maybe three or four short rows of chairs.

So, the band starts playing and what is instantly apparent is that it feels like your ears are in a lot of pain. We stuffed trash from our pockets and whatever we could find in our ears and stayed through the whole show. It was definitely way too fucking loud but the band was really good and it was awkward to leave as well since my girlfriend knew the band a little. What amazed me is that Stipe remained seated for the whole set which went on for almost an hour or so I would guess.

I think that it was some power electronics french dudes improvising along some visuals. I'm not sure if it was the loudest but my ears were hurting after that.

Also I'm surprised that people are saying Tool is the loudest concert they've been to. Does Maynard James Keenan's ego emit some kind of high pitched sound?
