hey blaster
I have heard allusions to beck TRYING to work verbal magic a la Dylan, but I have never ever read or heard anyone say he compares in terms of musical output, quality, influence, etc. again, I stated I do not liek Beck. I find his sound old and tired with bleep bleep noises and some wack wack WACK DJ scratchin' just a personal opinion. the lenny comparison is apt to a point though, both adapt old sounds, old styles, but the difference lies in that lenny is a traditionalist and really seeks to imitate while beck is a progressive and seeks to add new things to the amalgasm of influences he draws from.

beck ripped off ween's "pure guava". EVERYBODY who was listening to ween and beck during that time knows this to be the truth. Too bad you missed out! |

Nice to see the Art Blakey shoutout Rob....that's what I'm talking about.
Oh and.... Come on, this shit can go around in circles forever. Just because there are similarities between albums doesn't mean that one sat down and ripped off a record.

I did not know there was a new Beck album in process. That's good news.

Can't be proven, but it was me and a whole lot of people's thoughts when we all heard "Mellow Gold" for the first time. |

Beck for the most part is really good. I think he often writes really funny lyrics, AND makes great music. Anything he does I'm up for listening. Midnight Vultures is one of my absoulute favorites albums, and my favorite from him. The only one I had a tough time getting into was Mutations. Was very repeative. Every artist has influnces, but no, I don't see Beck as ripping off anyone. Sure you can compare him to similar artists like Ween or The Flaming Lips, doesn't mean he's ripping them off.

oh...what did I miss about Art Blakey?
http://www.duke.edu/~aks2/jazz/dis.htm I was listening to a version with Thelonious today of "In Walked bud" that blew my mind. & then I listen to The Ultimate Bud Powell & heard "Fantasy in Blue"...musical ecstasy/../ Personally, I do think Mellow Gold, Beck's best major release, is better than Pure Guava though...but it's not such a disparity of quality that I would ever insist on debating over it. |

ultimately though... isn't the "funny" thing just a self-defense mechanism due to insecurity? I swear I love the promotional pre-dgc beck recording...it's genuinely hilarious & musical & shows a great degree of promise of blossoming talent, but to always fall back on the humor thing is a pitfall. Frank Zappa was a great composer, but for lack of better lyrics, he is another victim of the same sort of predispostion. Many, many artists try to be funny & yet also sublime at the same time ala the rare acheivement of greats like John Lennon & Bob Dylan, & in the end, fail miserably. |

my phrasin was off then
the arrangements & prodcution are what make it like a pomo bowie record almost (in that regard...& there you have yr ween comparison in a germ) ../>in the final analysis, the horns are just there as flourish to pay testimony to the strength of the compostions...it's no Bird, Trane, Freddie, Miles, Warne...it's no Savoy Truffle even...God no...but it's cool/./. |

I think Guero is a really good album, it's more consistent than say Mellowgold. Mellowgold would have some of my favourite songs on it, but it's not as consistent as other Beck albums. It's tough to pick a favourite Beck album for me.
As for his lyrics, I don't necessarly find them funny. Sure they're witty, and some lines can make you smirk, but to call them funny is to call them stupid, and they're anything but stupid. He writes great abstract lyrics from a stream of consciousness. His music (lyrics included) are always interesting, which is few and far between when it comes to musicians and artists in general, these days.
