Yes, it is pretty amazing for acrylic on wood. Very well done.

Sorry to sound like a broken record. (haha)

It may have been one photo that was gridded off into sheet sized sections even & all of it has now been painted over successfully, & that's why it's painted on wood. something like masonite would have also worked to be sturdy enough to glue down the initial grids of sheet sized pieces of the photograph. Or at the very least, the artist must have employed grids to assist in freehand.

& that's nothing against the artist. i'm just trying to reveal a little about how it was perhaps created. painters have been using whatever forms of technology were available to them for a long, long time.

Well sir,

a projection of the picture was used to position eyes, mouth and nose on the canvas. Projection goes and the rest was done without it.

Do keep in mind that the painting is fairly big.

what else has your friend done? has he studied art? is he professional?

I'm gonna ask him if I could do a sort of catalogue of his work in which i could show you some other fantastic portraits he did.

I believe he did went to art college in his teens but he does mostly graphical work, which I consider this to be as well.

he did this painting on my girlfriend's and my request, as we were curious as how he would do a painting of that picture of Chan. And yes it is abselutely breath taking in reality.

Thanks atari. Interesting read.
I saw a documentary a few years ago about Vermeer's work.
There was a guy that reconstructed his paintings by building replica sets to see how the light and perspective corresponded to the paintings and he discovered that there were no errors in Vermeer's work. Camera Obscura was the culprit.

If Rembrandt had lived today, he probably would have been a famous photographer.
