So true. And look how they morphed primitive 1930s' blues into a new era. Sometimes Plant tried too hard and over-cooked it, but Bonham and Page never sound dated to my ears.

It's so much of a weird chemical feeling/thinking relationship, eh ?

I mean...theres going to be a particular vein that is hit when you really, really connect with a sound or a sensual stimulation. It's apart of what youre made of. It's fun to grow older and to be able to bundle up everything that has touched you, it doesnt matter if they make categorical sense.

edit, that is an excellent way to put it, quasar. There are so many dynamics to include (media, random chance, economics) to predict the success of a band who perhaps relied heavily on their influences that might not otherwise seem "special"...so as with any music, it comes down to your own blood.

Zeppelin III is great.

My favorite song from Zeppelin III:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7c1KCCXD7bw

Led Zeppelin III was the first band that got me interested in alternate tunings, since the first alternate tuning I tried was DADGAD (I believe Friends is in Open E.) They brought Celtic music to Americans, much like the Beatles brought Indian music to the West.

I don't think we really understand the impact Elvis had on these rockers when they were growing up in the late 50's/early 60's.

Analagy, there is a DVD release of Marilyn Chamber's Insatiable, with a picture of her in some very cut off shorts, which I recall in the early 80's was extremely sexy and provacative, but I could look away from the store display this is in, Kim's on 1st Ave, and see women walking down the street even shorter cut shorts. The pornification of western culture is incredible if you start looking for it.

I've been on a fuckin' Zeppelin bender these last few days, I, II and IV were records I found in my dads collection (I always wondered why he never had III ha ha) and I've had an off and on relationship with them over the years but after reading Hammer Of The Gods last year I have a new improved respect for their legacy....... You guys ever check out that DVD (not The Song Remains The Same which is naturally awesome) but the double DVD with all the great live footage? I heartily endorse it!

Yes and Genesis (Gabriel era) are both so awesome...... This is why I have no tolerance for punks anymore, so stereotypical in their opinions....... Tales From Topographic Oceans is a very underrated album........

How The West Was Won is a fucking great album....... Frankly I'd be inclined to check out say and entire album of live 30 minute performances of Dazed & Confused...... You know it would have to be like 3 CDs, it's a very long song......

Also IV used to be one I liked but thought radio had ruined for me, but I've been jamming it about lately and it's a very solid album from start to finish...... Their best? Only time will tell, but it is a great solo on Stairway....... Fantastic even........

saw plant & band of joy a while a go, first time i felt interested enough to check him out. this is actually a really good band. i am pleasantly surprised. nice new arrangements of zep tunes, good covers and originals.

I really dig dazed and corfused, black mountainside/white summer, several others...

zep was good at loud raunchy blues-rock, but because so many others were doing that, it seems less interesting than when they stretch out into other vistas...

technialy page is about the best guitarist i can think of. one of em at least. dude can do ANYTHING.. he's good at making noise, fingerpicking, all sorts of flashy guitar tricks or doing shit restrained, playing acoustic, playing bass, playing TRIPLE NECK guitars, playing 12-string, etc. he's all over the place, so many classic riffs. he's pretty brilliant.

but i'm not too into this band.

jimmy page has some really cool solo stuff and the page/plant album engineered by albini is topnotch.

sabbath undisputably rocks socks off, but my estimation of the worth of zep has increased in recent years.

add no quarter to my list of awesome tunes prevously listed.

It's weird, scanning my CDs, almost half are by bands that quite obviously like Led Zeppelin a LOT, but I can't stand them.

It probably is Plant's voice, yeah. It seems to be a quite common obstacle.

Plant's voice, yes. Other obstacles for me include:

The awful lyrics.
The hilariously bombastic drumming.
The sloppy guitar playing.
The fake blues riffs.
The silliness.
The seriousness.
The naked chests.

I guess John Paul Jones is the only element that doesn't irritate me. Though I hate his name.
