Well, I watched "the machinist" and "fargo" after borat.
The machinist is pretty good , I expected something "more" but it was nice... it freaks me out thinking that the skinny guy you could break in two with a handshake is the same one that would kick your ass in a bat costume...actors are creazky people. Fargo, well, I've seen it so many times, good old cohen movies... can't go wrong with them.

last night I watched:
The Science of Sleep : quite big letdown, some scenes are good, visually is really nice (not as great as I hoped, though..), but the story, especially the ending, is a bit disappointing imo. then I watched 11.14 , this was a nice surprise, kinda of magnolia meets a summer horror/black comedy movie.

i watched jean cocteau's blood of a poet last night.
it's amazing. has some fantastic aphorisms, for example "mirrors would do well to reflect more before sending back images". it's a classic. |

Apocalypto. It was a bit silly really and I kept thinking of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers vid whenever the guy ran towards the camera in slo-mo.

It's an intentionally plain portrait of a seemingly naughty subject. It has to be one of the tamest R-rated films of the past 3 decades. And it's also probably one of the least passionate & in-depth portraits of a person. What do we really learn about Bettie? She's religious and has no problem with exhibiting herself sexually. Bettie was nearly valedictorian of her high school and taught for a while, yet she comes across so shallow here. Why is this film so short? What inspired her decision to become an object to simply observe? I guess she represents an ironic kind of innocence. I can only imagine Mary Harron wanting to make this film for the sake of making a statement about censorship with regard to depictions of sexuality in art. That this film received an R-rating today says something [What does this film have: nudity, curse words...]. Oh, and it's also one of the least cinematic movies out there. Don't let the black-and-white photography and sporadic splashes of color fool you - Pleasantville it isn't.
With all that said though, I found the last scene of Bettie preaching outdoors to be the saddest, most moving scene in the whole movie. Which is odd to say because she doesn't look at all unhappy about doing it. |

just finished watching la strada. i thought it was a great film, a sort of morose and symbolic morality play, starring a fabulously mousey and chaplinesque lead woman. it says alot of interesting things about our desire to control or be controlled, and where compassion and joy stands in relation to power and brute force. on monday i will buy 8 1/2, so i'll tell you what i think this week.

Deconstructing Harry. I've been on a Woody Allen thing lately. I think I'll watch Crimes and Misdemeanors next.
